"birds sure do tend to look so much better in the wild"

I have that thought myself from time to time. It's just so true.

As for your question, I think that only someone who's had happy healthy bird for most of it's life can truly answer that. I think that the "long haul" when it comes to life with birds is something that so few have experience with so it's hard to get that kind of advice from anyone....I've tried. I mean, how many people does one run into that have had a bird from a chick up until it's death at a ripe old age. Maybe the smaller birds but certainly not the larger (long lived) ones. So who can really tell you what life is like with a bird when it reaches 40? Or if our methods of care will carry them into a healthy old age.

The wild and our homes are so much the opposite....who knows what we can do. I personally try to be as well read as possible and try to implement the best practices I know of. We can only hope we're doing the right thing.

I have to say, I'd love to travel extensively and observe parrots in the wild. The first time I ever saw wild Monk parakeets on long island I flipped out. It was the weirdest sight. So out of place but amazing. I heard them first. I knew that it was an unusual sound so I started looking around. Then I spotted it. A huge nest on top of a telephone pole with them sitting on the cables and flying all around it. That was the only time I ever saw parrots in the "wild."

observing birds in the wil...

If you are interested in observing avians in wilds of Costa Rica, e-mail me privately...

I am taking a group to Costa Rica in June. It is an adventure vacation. We will be riding horses through the rain forest, doing a zip-line canopy tour, etc.

I would love to post the website here, but don't want to get into trouble...

Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Amy

this sunday on "nature", features the migritory red knots, and the horseshoe crab. examines the relationship between the two threatened species. the red knots migrate from the tip of south america to northern canada, stopping only briefly at delaware bay where it relies almost completly on horseshoe crab eggs to refuel for the second leg of the journey. should be quite the tear jerker.

awillie64,

Thank you for the offer. Parrot watching AND Zip-lining. Combination of two of my favorite things.....lol. Actually I just got back from a cruise last weekend. Thought I might get to see some wild Scarlet macaws but apparently I was on the wrong end of Belize for that. I would have loved to come back with pics to post I did zip-lining for the first time there and what a thrill it was-and scary. It's something I would be interested in doing but unfortunately my budget for a vacation anytime soon is spent. Thanks again.

LisaB,

I haven't forgotten about getting the info for the LI parrot club you were telling me about. I'm going through a transition at my job now and it's taking forever for things to settle down and for me to get into a steady schedule where I can actually plan my time with any certainty. I haven't been able to make even one LIPS meeting since joining in Oct. I can't wait to go to one.
