I forgot to mention one thing: I was asked to attend this auction today in behalf of a few out of town bird enthusiasts/bird loving families/friends etc...I had not one hesitation ...my heart immediately spoke my words of 'refusal'....simply because I could not personally stand the cringe of heartfelt ache being amongst all the innocent-unknowing eyes of feathered ones facing an unknown tomorrow....I wish I had enough funds & abilities to have intervened in behalf of the ones who have no voice in the inevitable they face...I guess I am just way too sensitive to be helpful in such situations, I hold my head down in shame because of my admitted weakness~but I can continue to pray...& trust that 'good' will come from some of this turmoil~

I am so very confused by your post msmurfy... why be the originator of this thread AND perpetuate the TURMOIL that susan had to go thru? I would have just left it at your original post. Its those of us that know the person, that would know how truly necessary this had to be. And understand her reasonings. And who ever wants to hurt a friend?

i just can't imagine how anyone who knows Susan, would think that she would allow these beloved birds to just go to anyone... i watched the entire 5.5 hours of the auction..she passed on selling a few. (reason unknown). Especially if they didn't make a price minimum.

I also didn't realize that there were some of the biggest breeders, and zoos private and public around the country bidding today...either in person or online. it seemed pretty historic and pretty important. overall it was pretty large operations that bought these birds.

i agree it was a sad day... but not for the reasons mentioned. Some of these birds had been with susan for over 30 years... she had no intention of ever letting them go...ever.

Can you Imagine how dire it must be to have to sell your first birds? because i can't fathom it... and then to find out that people she knows personally, actually helped cause alot of the problems? yes very sad indeed!!

My heart and prayers go out to S.Clubbs, and her birds. It is heartbreaking.

I am thankful that she had the option of an auction. When Indiana changed the laws concerning rehabilitated wildlife, I had to either kill or release the handicapped animals I had. Either one was a death sentence for them.

I hope everyone that was faced with the decision you say you had to make, chose release over killing - at least that way they had some chance. Especially if released in the safest area possible with clean water nearby and some kind of sustenance nearby for their particular species.

I probably would have released them into the back on a rental moving van and drove them myself to some rescue/place/state where they were legal and yes, I would have gambled spending time in the pokie if caught trying to do just that.

I can't 100% agree on this topic. I think if you enter a live auction and bid online for a bird you should be part of a club or something and be recognized with some background before being permitted to bid. You know like those white collar events where you have to have a certain income to get in and bid on a bird, you should be part of a club to bid online on the bird with enough of a reputation to enable you to get in that way the online auction is safe and the bird goes to a certified person. I would bid on an online auction for a bird, provided that all the cards were up front from my party and their's. I know the way it's done now is very negative and ill concieved but if they took the steps neccicary to make it comfortable for the bird, the breeder, and to screen potential buyers during the auction I see nothing wrong with it.

The LAW states I had to take them back to the EXACT location they came from, or have them put down within 6 months. I released them here, where I thought they stood a little chance of surviving, and where I could sneak them food.

My deer, dogs chased him out of the area and finally killed him. My Fox, crawled under a brush pile, we found his remains later. The neighbors fed and killed my other deer..... There is more, but.... My hands were tied, nothing I could do. I don't care very much for the laws that are made by people with narrow vision, in the name of kindness to animals. Mother Nature can be very cruel, I have pulled many a baby from her grasp and saved it's life. I always released when I could. If the animal could not take care of it's self, it had a permanent home here.

I was also a licensed gamebreeder. All my animals were poisoned in the name of kindness?????? Better off dead????? Touchy subject for me, sorry. Anyway, I am glad she had the option to market her birds. Not everyone sucks and the birds do stand a great chance of being happy. That's all.

Oh, Glenda. I am so sorry you had to make a decision like that. I couldn't imagine how heartbreaking that had to be.
I can only hope that the birds in this auction found decent and loving homes.

she should have sold them all to her mother for a dollar and then then gave her hubby $.50 haha....then her mommy could have given them back to her.

honestly i think if it was on a bid, the birds probably went to good homes. i mean, it's not like they'd be going for $50. i hope they all found good homes. and i wouldnt be so quick to judge her because when you're up against a rock and a hard place you can't say you might not have done the same thing.

I'm sorry but I have to clear this up. There is no court order forcing the sale of the birds. The splitting up of assets was decided between herself and her husband before the divorce. A reporter went to the courts to verify that there was no court order and later confirmed this with her. In fact there was an article that mentioned this. I wished I remembered the link though. If I can find the link I will post it here.

Here you go. The article:

Highlighted this :
The prominent local vet and avian expert's decision to auction off the birds comes as she and her husband of 29 years divvy up assets before they file for divorce.

Bird sale outrages animal activists

Also, this discussion and further proof that there was no court order was actually held in another message board.

I apologize again for this post but I think we have a right to know the truth on this.
