In Ohio, there is at least one weaned baby bird raffled off each year at a bird fair. I don't remember if they do it more often than that or not. In recent years, it has been a goffin cockatoo, a female si eclectus, and I think a congo african grey. Although I've not been to those shows, I can remember what they raffled for some reason. Other shows raffle finches, doves, canaries, lovies, etc.

The idea of raffling off a bird is just horrible to me. I can't imagine doing that. I can't believe you could just send your baby home with a complete stranger and have no idea about the person other than what they tell you. :

in some states its illegal. NJ and NY are two.
I know because one club in NY many moons ago, used to raffle them off. I won a cockatiel on year. I had to purchase the tiel for a penny, since I actually won the "cage" she was in. Then they no longer did that.

I do not like that idea either. At our local bird club fair they auction off birds to the highest bidder the last day of the fair (they did this at the fair last October, I did not stay for the auction at the Spring fair so I am not sure if this went on at that time as well). Let's just say that I decided right then that I would never join the bird club.

Has anyone called this "Delores," who "has compassion for these ANIMALS" and asked her what the hell she is thinking? ...Very Disappointing!

I think that is awful. How horrible and careless.

I actually thought about calling her and asking her to please not do this. I don't know if it will help but I'm going to try. I think we're going to the bird fair as well and try to talk to her about this horrible idea. I tend to get overly passionate, for lack of a better phrase, about these kinds of things so I have to be careful...LOL. IF I was going to breed, which I never would, I would never just give babies to anyone who filled out a ticket. We are so picky about who adopts our rescues now that I make people mad sometimes when I tell them no.
If I get this woman, I'll let you know what she says.

It is nice to read that most of you think this idea is terrible. I think it is offensive, too. If you have any luck, let us know

Yeah, I understand the overpassionate thing... I once emailed a lady whos website I found that was breeding dogs that were basically mutts and calling them new breeds and trying to sell them for hundreds of dollars, she basically had a puppy mill going on. I kind of told her off a bit, told her she was the contributing to the dog overpopulation and that most of her dogs would end up being put to sleep anyway (needless to say she didnt respond.) But it feels good to know that you are on the side of the defenseless ones. So I say if you want to go speak your mind to this lady, do it with pride, do it for the little birdies, and do it for the rest of us, too, Just don't get arrested, that won't help anyone.
