Parrot Custody Battle

Bizarre Parrot Custody Battle Settled
Florida Judge Ordered Parrot to Appear in Court in 'Unusual' Case
By JOHN BERMAN, JOSHUA GAYNOR, JESSICA HOFFMAN and LEE FERRAN
April 7, 2009

When he looked over his courtroom to see two emotional women and one very loud, squawking parrot, Palm Beach County Judge James Martz put into words what many were thinking. "As we sit here right now, this is an unusual case to say the least," he said.

My English professor in college once invited her students to her apt for a review session. In a prominent place in the livingroom stood an empty parrot cage. Someone asked if she had a bird and she said yes, but right now he was with her ex. Apparently they had to go to court and it was agreed that they would share custody of the bird! They each got the bird for a year or so at a time. She said this with great bitterness.

In this case we don't know a lot of details but I agree that the bird belongs with the original owner. The story didn't mention if the people who found him advertised a found bird or not. I would imagine if she had had put signs up, a notice at the humane society, craigslist, etc it would have helped her case.

I'm glad the original owner got the bird back. I can't imagine how devastating it must've been to finally find where your beloved pet has been for the past 3 years, just to be shot down again and told you can't have it back.

Fair enough the other woman had grown close to it too in 3 years of caring for it, but she needs to walk in the shoes of its original owner and think about how it would have felt if it was the other way around.

Unhappy

I have an embarrassing confession to make, however I feel I must be honest... If I place myself in these woman's shoes...

If I were the original owner I would feel Tequila should be returned to me... heck, he was mine first... it's not like I gave him away... it was an honest mistake!

If I were the woman who had found Lucky, & had been caring for him for the last 3 years... I would feel it would only be right that he be allowed to stay with me... after all, I rescued him from the elements, & I'd think that the other woman should've had him in a harness, for pete's sake! (& p.s... I don't always harness my guys outside )

I know it's wrong, perhaps even twisted , however, every time I tried honestly putting myself in their places, to see where I thought he should be placed, that is what I came up with.

Please tell me at least one other Bird Boardie had the same epiphany... ANYONE ?

mabird, I definitely know what you mean! That's the reason I posted the article because I really do not know what was best for the bird's situation. It seemed like both homes cared for the bird and I feel for both of them.

I saw this on Good Morning America. I do believe that the woman who found the Grey did not try to find the owner. And the original owner had put up posters, etc. to try to find him.

Well, if that truly is the case, then I do believe that outcome was/is fair!
