Wow I have never heard of this before! Seeing how a couple of my male budgies would probably fight to the death, and have severely injured each other before they were separated, I can see how this might happen. But it's awful that they bet on them and let them fight! ugh!

I can see rooster and betta fish fights, but canary??? Oh geeze... I'd surely hope it doesn't go into 'parrot fights' as there could be some seriuos damage! (then again, parrots are rather noisy...)

Rooster fighting, like dog fighting is a big business and is usually intertwined with drugs and gambling and perhaps other things. These activities have begun to raise more awareness, something we have Michael Vick to thank for his role educating the many people who have trouble grasping just how mainstream these activities can be.

While this is news to me regarding the species in question, it is also consistent with the behavioral repetoire of someone who takes pleasure in suffering and makes money off of their deviant and illegal definition of sport.

...I wonder how many animals were bought at stores, how many were bred specificallly for the purpose of supplying fighters, and how many were freebies on the internet postings like CL... Perhaps another example of why we should all be paying attention.

That's just sad! As if people can't find enough ways to spread their nastiness. Especially because it will be a lot harder to identify a canary fighting ring.

Yeaaa this story was posted on a lovebird forum Im a part of - it really disgusted me, especially since neighbors say the people who were running it were people you would NEVER think to do such a thing. It just goes to show, anyone can be capable of animal cruelty, its just so sad!!
