the only way a budgie will NOT live to the age its noted for, is due to neglect, improper care, accidents, or disease.

all my budgies lived very long happy lives. My oldest was about 15-18 when she died.

I'm sorry but I have to ask. How old are you? And why do you want to breed Budgies so badly? Reading this thread makes me feel like it's something you got in your head and are going to do regardless of the warnings you have gotten from the seasoned pros here.

PLEASE, for the sake of the Budgies and the baby's......wait until you are settled before getting involved in such a complicated thing as breeding. SO much can go so horribly wrong.

This isn't a game, it's a really sad thing when breeding goes wrong. Your baby's are very sweet looking. Just concentrate on loving them, and giving them the best you can.

If your need to breed is to make money, then you just can't do it....it would be wrong and cruel.

Please listen to what these people are saying to you.

Is it just me or in the pic of Angel does it look like there is a sore on her nose? The cere is blue on the right and then that big red spot on the left and the nostril looks a little puffy. I have never seen this on my keets so I just wanted to see what it could be...

Yes I noticed that too. There is a problem with the nares on the first budgie.
The one with the funny cere "could" be a male with a problem or could be a female just beginning to crust up but Ive never seen it happen only on one side. Either way it would see the vet if it were my bird. The white one is a female. The white one also looks young. The blue bird looks older to me.

I'm a good 10 years out of college and back then, it was next to impossible to find a dorm that allowed any pets (I lucked out in finding a fin & feather-friendly dorm). I can't imagine that it's gotten easier to find on-campus housing that allows pets these days, what with so many people with allergies and liability issues.

Breeding is a serious issue, particularly when it comes to a species as popular as the budgie. There is absolutely no shortage of budgies out there. One look at Petfinder.com will show you that.

Important questions that you really should ask yourself (sorry if these are repeats):

Do you know the lineage of these budgies? If you purchased these budgies from a pet store, please DO NOT breed them. There is always the chance that the birds could be related, in-bred or not genetically sound. You risk hatching out babies that are predisposed to genetic problems.

Do you have the time necessary to devote to the care of any babies that the parents reject or neglect? You mentioned being in school. That's a good 8-10 hours a day that you will be outside of the home, not to mention time for socializing, after-school activities, sports, church committments, etc. In the event of a day-one hand-feeding situation, a baby bird is going to need to be fed CONSTANTLY. You can't just leave for school at 8am and hope that baby is OK when you return home at 4pm (just giving an example). If Mom & Dad want to take you away for a long weekend, who will care for hungry babies then?

Do you have the financial resources necessary to care for your pair AND any offspring? What if Mamma Bird become egg-bound? She'll need to go to a veterinarian who is familiar with parrots, preferably someone who is a board-certified avian vet. What if one of the babies has a problem... let's say an injury, splay-legs, a digestive-tract blockage. You get the idea. These things don't just go away on their own. They need immediate attention. If you are not employed, are your parents willing to foot the bill?

And let's say that your classmates can't offer homes for the babies: you'll need to cage your budgies, too. They can't just be expected to bunk down with Mamma Bird and Daddy bird.

Have you thought about finding a mentor? Budgies are popular exhibition birds. There are at least 2 "budgie clubs" in the US that are parent organizations to dozens of state/regional budgie clubs. These organizations work together to breed and show budgies. Perhaps you can search on-line (with your parents' consent, of course) for a club in your area. With some luck you mind be able to find a reputable, knowledgeable breeder to help you.

If you think your friends would not be able to keep their budgies alive that long, maybe you want to work on educating them before you let them adopt one of your birds. You will have to study very hard to get into vet school, so you may not have too much time for breeding budgies. Also, I worked at a vet school & the students were awfully busy (and very few of them lived in dorms) -- again, not much time for taking care of baby budgies. I wish you the best of luck in your chosen career, but think you may want to delay your breeding until your have finished your residency.

Sometimes females will loose the crusty part of the cere and it'll go back to a white or white with blue coloration. My Sophia is a good example of this occuring...

Lost half of the crusty part soon after coming home

Lost the rest of it

Turning tan/crusty once again

Blue one in center, crusty once again and has been

AngelPosibility, these people are only trying to help you and your birdies out and it seems like your takig it the wrong way and thinking its all a joke, i strongly suggest that you take all constructive critisism/advice and learn from it, sometimes if you breed your budgies when they are not ready or old enough the female can become egg-bound, i didnt allow my budgies to breed untill they were at least 2 and i made sure they ate and drank properly fed them vegies and so forth, were not trying to stop you from trying to have them breed, we are just making sure its done the right way to avoid any complications in the future, the responses you got are great take them for consideration instead of being hard-headed, i bet it will come in handy. By the way your albino budgie looks like a baby.

Listen, all my life i've been trying to breed budgies! Abought Albino from a breeder and Angel from Petco,im sure they r NOT related. Also all the breeder had was males (odd).
If you guys are gonna start telling me i can't breed them...Guess what? Albino mounted Angel already. At first i was scared and took him off then i searched the internet fro that behavior and it said that that was mating so i turned back to them and Albino was getting of Angel! I've read all about what you guys posted got scared and removed the nesting material (except for the little house they like to hide in that). Then Albino mounted Angel and now im scared what happpens if they have chicks?
