Thumbs down Is that a good setup?

I already post that thread in Canaries section but not much help. so i am trying here if anyone can help me more:

Is that a good setup? I put the pair seperately into a double divided cage. I put a fluorescent light (UVB-UVA) on the back and i put a metal piece on the back of the cage so there is some space so the light can't reach the canaries, so they can choose when they want to be exposed. Is that a good idea? Any other ideas?

MY OPINIONS (disclaimer) are not probablly going to be your favorites but here goes: I for one hate those tiny breeder cages. They are too small and cramped for a bird that never gets out. Flying is especially important for a female canaries excercise to help her through egg laying to not become egg bound. The light should be on top and dont worry about exposure - just put it at the back of the cage more shining down and they can get less by coming to the front. Why is there a nest and nest material in a cage with a bird with no mate? Dont encourage egg laying until they have been together for awhile. And then lastly, why are you feeding Red Factor food to non red factor canaries, or am I missing something? Put your light on a timer to come on and go off by itself then AFTER you put birds together you can start to increase the time to encourage breeding - THEn offer nest material and nest baskets.. Also, why is the nest material SO close to the nest? The male will be the one to start the nest building. Oh and she will probablly tear it up a few times before he gets it right, lol. Kinda like me and my hubby!

Jee, thanks. Ok, oh and...they are together right now (i remove the dividing part oof the cage) and they have more space now. Is that bad for the nesting material to be so close to the nest?

And if i put the light above of the cage, how do the below cages catch some light? I mean, if i put other canaries in the 2 below levels of the cage, they will don't be exposed. The light is 18W. I don't think that is too much bright.

I would invest in a larger breeding cage and some natural wood perches.

See my post under cleaning cages 'canaries and finches'
If you want to successfully rear finches etc.copy the breeder cages used in Europe.
All wire cages don't give the birds any privacy, and they are never long enough for active little birds.

Lighting is another reason to ditch those old school cages. The birds need to fly and cannot do that even with the divider out. The nesting material in a different place encourages flying
