I saw in passing somewhere recently that a lot of breeders retire their birds around 30 years. No idea if that is a general rule.

There is no age limit on breeding parrots. I've heard of a female indian ringneck that was breeding at the age of 31, and they have an expected lifespan of about 30 years, if even that. I heard this about 7+ years ago, so I have no clue if she's even still alive.

With that said, birds on a healthy diet, and in good condition don't need to be retired. If breeder parrots are being retired, there's a good chance that the bird isn't healthy or in condition to breed (unless it's a reputable breeder who doesn't believe on breeding past a certain age).

Hi,

We raise Blue Front Amazons and I have a hen who is still breeding at 35 yrs. old, showing no signs of stress. We monitor her calcium and have had GORGEOUS babies from her for the last 18 years. Generally about every couple of years she takes some time off. Not more than a year as yet but seems to know her own limits so to speak.

They are the best parents we have and she is the oldest in our aviary.

I don't think there is any definite age- I know of a female black cockatoo that raised her first clutch of babies at the ripe old age of 50. That was a several years ago and as far as I know she is still breeding.
