If memory serves, Knoxville is about 40 minutes from Pigeon and Gatlinburg.
LOL, I was typing my post as you posted yours. Is Knoxville a big airport? A 40 minute drive isn't too bad.

Nevermind: Missed this part:
Knoxville, is small and many larger airlines don't fly in. I used to go there every year.

I'm liking the sound of that place, even though everyone is recommending times when school is still in session (although I guess if it were planned during, say, my spring break, it'd be possible)....

Karen:

I'm very familiar with it. May is divine in the Smokies. YOu beat the tourists, the wildlife is abundant, the attractions are open and some places have off season rentals. There are wonderful chalets in the mountains that can also be rented. Will and I once rented a terrific place on the side of the mountain up in Gatlinburg. It had 4 bedrooms (huge) with even more beds in the game room and the great room. I believe you could sleep up to 6 couples easily. It also had at least 3 full baths. I think we payed $1200 for the entire week. We split that 4 ways, so it was really inexpensive. I have friends in Maryville (20 minutes away) and I'd never hear the end of it if I didn't stay with them, but I could easily hook up with everyone else. Its very hard to beat Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg for beauty and entertainment.

As for the Smokies, they are the MOST visited of any American park. That should tell you something. As for weather, its almost identical to Maryland, with a longer spring and summer. For example, my friends uncover their pools in March and are swimming in April and May. Its also very warm through October. In off season, most rooms are half price along the strip in Pigeon Forge.

Its nowhere as humid as Florida, very safe and probably less expensive. Also, its more central for Easterners.

Hmmm....Are there any larger airports anywhere around there? If not, perhaps members who did want to fly (or needed to fly due to distance) would fly to another members' place and then they would carpool?

Just a thought here....

Toss the date out there for your spring break! One date is as good as another when planning things. It will be good for some, not for others. I was just thinking of trying to avoid the ~~~HEAT~~~~

Nashville is the closest larger airport and again, it has tons of things to do and places to stay. Its very country, however. That's why it loses its appeal with me. However, I'd still go if it were there. I haven't been myself, but many of my friends have.

Awesome idea, and it would definitely help expenses if people would get together and share. It would be lots of fun too. I will make this our vacation, as soon as a date's decided!

Kevin, do you want to put Pigeon Forge on the list as being a possible location?
