My husband calls it aviary habitat engineering, he thinks I could go into business doing it. Some people just don't think about it enough, I would love to teach some pet stores how to make their birds cages happy environments for the birds before they get adopted. I went into a vets office in my town and the cage his bird was in was deplorable, dirty and not fun at all for his own bird. You would think that a vet would at least have his staff keep the birds cage at least clean and have some motivational toys in it.

I used to spend hours on cleaning and rearranging. I can't do it any more! I change perches around twice a month. The toys I try to change around once a week. I usually put in 1 toy they haven't seen for a while and swap 2 from the other cage. That gives them each 3 "new" toys a week. There are times where I get lazy and just rotate them around in the cage without swapping them.
And my only rule is that as long as the toy is out of "damage zone" (can't be pooped on) it's good.

It sometimes takes me forever too. When rearranging perches too, you have to consider if they are being placed where nothing is in the poop zone below it... It limits the configurations you can come up with somewhat. My TAG is spoiled and has many many toys which are randomly changed and rearranged and swapped out. It keeps him busy though when he's inside the cage.
