Hi Hsmoscout, noticed that you are from St. Louis. There is a bird show coming up at the end of August. Usually the bird show birds are priced more reasonably than the local pet store. I just went to Varietees for the first time last weekend. I LOVE that store! Anyhow, the Gateway show is coming up on August 29th, details can be found here: Gateway Parrot Club - improving the lives of exotic birds...

There are some interesting guest speakers and also a toy workshop that I am looking forward to attending.

I have had a quaker, quakers are very loud, not ear piercing loud but always chattering and doing a quaker type noise. They can become jealous very easily, even when socialized (at least mine was)

I have seen green cheeks and have come to the conclusion they are more "entertaining"
they are always hanging upside down flapping around their cages playing with toys.

The ones I have seen have been cuddly but a little nippy, not hard bites more playful bites.

If I ever decided to get another smaller bird out of the two I would choose a green cheek.

Thank you. I was planning on attending. I plan to get my next bird at Varietees just like Peanut. That is the only place we would ever get a bird!

What else are you looking for in a bird?

Talker: Even birds who have a reputation to talk might not talk. My mom has an African Grey who is much happier whistling tunes than talking. Which is fine with her.

Cuddly: Again, this can change from bird to bird, depending on their own personalities.

Would be your bird, but be nice to others: This I strongly believed depends on the bird's education. I have a Senegal, who apparently are notorious for being one person birds, who will happily go see anyone and is nice with everyone. I socialized her from early on and continue to do so.

I don't have a GCC or a Quaker.
However, I did meet a number of Quakers and I wouldn't personally own one, which isn't to say they aren't good pets. But for me, it wouldn't work. All the ones I've met have been nippy in some way, very stubborn (for example, wouldn't come off my hand or shoulder (if they managed to get there before I stopped them)) and I'm not a fan of their call. With that said, the Quaker owners I do know swear by them and LOVE them. I can't deny that they have a LOT of personality ;)

I haven't met as many GCC as I did Quakers, but all the ones I've met are the contrary of what I keep reading on their subject. Those I've met are nippy, will cuddle but might, all of a sudden (specially if it seems that they think they don't have your undivided attention) take a bit out of you. Compared to my Poicephalus, I would NOT call them quiet birds. However, I must agree that they are playful and do have gorgeous colours. But I know I wouldn't own one.

With all that said, might I ask why you seem to want either a GCC or Quaker? Have you considered other species? What is it that makes you want a GCC or Quaker?

Well at the bird shop, who I completely trust, said it would be the next step up from a tiel.

If you don't mind me asking, based on what did they say this?

I don't think any bird is really a "step-up" from another. I mean they all have their own things that make them special. I always find it sad when people see size (not saying it's your case though) as the "stepping stone".

Well if you are mostly looking at Quakers and GCC because that is what the store said, then maybe you are overlooking other species of birds that might be also appropriate for you.

Mind you, a Quaker and/or a GCC might be the best choice for you, but it might be interesting to research a couple more different birds.
