I can understand and totally agree with this reasoning. To me a person should not choose a bird because it is a good "first bird" or a "step up" or for any other reason than the parrot (or bird) suits a person's lifestyle and personality.

I hesitate to "recommend" a bird simply because it is a "step-up." If you want to know about the personality of my particular bird then OK - visit my blog ( http://www.birdboard.com/forum/blogs/notenoughtime/ ) where you can read some day-to-day experiences... But this is just *my* bird - not the one you will end up getting...

Quakers and green-cheeks are both wonderful parrots.

I voted for GCCs, though -- I think that they are a little bit better all-around for two reasons:

1) GCCs, to my knowledge, are not illegal to own in the US, while Quakers are illegal in a few states (NJ, PA, CA, HI, to name a few)

-and-

2) GCCs are a bit easier on the ears ;)

I don't think that you can go wrong with a green-cheeked conure or any member of the Pyrrhura genus (black-capped, maroon-bellied, painted, etc.).

Thanks! I went to the bird store today to check out their GCCs and Quakers. Lucky for me, they have all color mutations of GCCs and both green and blue Quakers. I'm seriously thinking about a GCC. They are so cute and tiny and funny! The only down side is the "nippy" factor of the GCCs. After a minute of holding him he gave me a little "taste test" with his beak :( but the next time I go, it will be very hard not to leave with one of the little guys.
