Exclamation ***Calling All Computer Junkies***

I just bought an apple 3g power macantosh for $40.00 from a garage sale. I hooked it all up, but when i plugged in the monitor alls I see is a black screen. I know the monitor is getting power becuase the power button lights up. It goes from green to orange. I know that the monitor works, becuase I hooked it up to my other computer. I am not sure what to do so if anyone can help me out here IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!!!!!! Just tell me if you need some more info.

Hi
I build computers for a hobby but have never owned a Macantoch; however, i'm sure the same computer principles apply. It sounds to me like you have a bum video card. For a 40 buck computer, it may not be worth it to get a new video card. Do you have a bird?

I'm a Mac guy though no guru. This is what I'd try if I had the problem:

Try opening the case up and finding the video card/connection. My guess is it will probably be in a PCI slot. Make sure the card is seated properly in its connection by pulling the card out, blowing the socket out with some compressed air and re-seating it.

I had a PowerPC Mac that was out prior to the G3's and when I upgraded this tower to a G3, once or twice I had to do the above procedure to the upgrade card to get it to boot up.

Worth a try. A G 3 for $40 is still a very usable machine.

Mac Geek here..

Do you hear the fan running and the hard drive spinning up?
If you hear them, that's a good sign that it's only the video card, but I think the video is onboard to the system board.

The monitor goes orange because it's not getting a video signal from the computer, it should turn green when it gets it.

You could try holding down the Apple, Option and the P and R keys down on the keyboard, when you start the computer, keep holding them until you hear the computer make it's startup tone 3 times and then let go and let it boot up. There are other more advanced things you could try too, but give that a shot.
