OT: Abandoned Dog

Lori brought home a border collie that was left at Gateway College on Thursday. Campus security saw someone walk up, tie him to a tree and leave. We need to find him a home, our HOA and 2 labs are not happy about him being here. We have called some of the animal rescue places and have been told they don't accept older dogs. The vet figures he's about 5 and no chip. We have concerns about delivering him to the Humane Society, as an older dog. We really don't want to see him put down, he is a really sweet dog, obviously someone's pet. We even called Maricopa County Sheriff's Office thinking Sheriff Joe Arpaio would take him. He is using one of the older prisons for abused animals. It was outside business hours and they said take him to animal control. Any suggestions (takers)?

Jeff:

Border collie rescues are all over the place. I suggest you do a net search and see what you come up with. That's exactly how I found my Aussie sheepdog. You probably won't have any problems rehoming it.

Yep, that's what I was going to suggest. You don't have any local rescues? Not a shelter, but a rescue.

We have been doing searches and calling for 2 days. Of the organizations that have returned our calls, they say get hold of the Humane Society. Just got off the phone with Friends for Life and they said the same. Maybe we have a misconception about the HS, but I thought they euthanized animals after 3 days if they deem them unadoptable. I wonder how long I can convince the HOA that we are just pet sitting??? Thanks for the responses.

Try putting an ad in the paper. I used to work for a rescue here in town. Most of our newspapers will let you place an add for a lost animal for free. About the Humane Society and putting them down after 3 days, that just depends on the Humane Society. I used to volunteer for ours here in town too. They call themselves "a low kill" shelter. The only time they put a dog down is if it is a threat to humans or if they are very sick and too costly to pay for the medical attention.
Look in the paper for people who have lost their dog. I know you said this one was tied to a tree but you don't know why. Pretty sad though. If I think of something else I'll let ya know. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Oh, have you tried looking up border collie rescues on the internet like Nancy suggested? You might want to give it a try and your chances of them taking it in are better than the HS or a local rescue. Look it up on the net and you'll find a ton. You might have to drive for an hour or so though to get the dog there, but at least you'll know it will be safe. I used to volunteer for a Great Dane Rescue also called Dane Train. We would transport Great Danes across the country to make sure they went to good homes.

Lara, We have been on-line and in the phone book. the border collie rescues were answering machines on which we left messages (one in Phoenix and one in Tucson). I have been posting on the local paper website, pets911, etc. We may have 2 interested parties, co-workers of Lori's. Lori wants me to drive it to my mom's house in Fla. We'll keep trying.
