Birds and Glasses
Ok time for some of the expert advice that is so prevalent on this site. I am having a problem with Rio grabbing my glasses and throwing them to the ground. I guess he doesn't like how they look on me. Has anyone fought this issue and won. My only other choice would be to stuff him in a shoe box and store him under the bed. He won't do it all of the time. Some of the time I believe it is related to jealousy, as he does it when I have Mija on the other arm. Other times it's just him and me. It doesn't appear to be related to me touching him wrong or startling him. I think sometimes it's just his game, and a game I would like to put an end to quickly. And he is quick. And he very rarely touches Lori's glasses if at all.

Sounds like he did it once and got a "cool" reaction from you and is now trying to get the same thing again everytime he does it.
The solution to the problem would be to not let him on your shoulders anymore, providing that is where he is when he does this. I love my birds with all I have but will not let them on my shoulder because of dominance issues. I simply do not have the control that I should have all the time when they are on my shoulder, so I don't let them. You are the only one that can gauge your birds reactions to things and you are the only one that can make the decision whether your shoulder is a safe place for them to be for you. Gracie, my Timneh is thunderstruck in love with me and there is nothing I can't do with or to her. That having been said I will still get nailed by Gracie when Katrin, my wife, is in the room and comes too close when we are schmoosing on the couch. She gets so riled up that she loses site of who the good guys are and who the bad guys are, she just wants to put the hurt on Katrin and if she can't get at her she will in her frustration at not being able to, she will nail me instead. Also I am only able to "interact/play" with one bird at a time without getting the others all upset, so it might be a jealousy thing after all. Then again the solution might be ... contacts. lol They are Masters of manipulation and train you much quicker than you could ever train them.

It got so bad around here that I'm proudly wearing contacts. There is no cure for glasses abuse and I have 10 pair to prove it.

We have the same problem here. They love to grab and remove my husband's glasses. It annoys him to death. I've tried everything including the bird bitters and have had no success.
Strangely they don't bother my glasses, just my husbands. Perhaps I don't play the game well. He gets all hot and bothered. I just calmly remove them from the glasses and put them back on. They just leave mine alone.

Thanks guys, so I guess the shoe box is the only answer.

all my eye glasses have chewed ear pieces, broken nose pieces. It is frustrating and if I leave them on some of my birds think it is a built in perch. The worst one is my U2. When she is not trying to perch on them she is ripping them off my face. It has gotten to the point I have abandoned eyeglasses inside the house.

Yep, I bought the expensive ones that you can bend all around. Well it only took 1 second & my glasses were in 2 pieces. One of my Severes just snipped it in half at the nose piece. The ear pieces are chewed. They have been sautered too many times. I am considering contacts. By the way Nancy, How long did it take you to get used to your contacts with the bi-focals?

If Abbie would just take my glasses and throw them down I would be content!
She grabs them off and then clamps down on them with intent to destroy! There is no getting them away from her beak and talons, so I just don't wear them when she is with me. Last time we had her wingys clipped, she started for the person's glasses (who was doing the clipping) Just as I was about to warn her she pulled her head up and away with a "gotcha'" smile! She was well aware of A Gray's penchent for glasses stealing! :o) I am sooooo glad Abbie chose me to come live with! Life is infinitly sweeter with her!!! |
