Hurricane Bird Tips
Hurricane Dennis is coming. I thought I would share some things I have learned thanks to Charley. Charley missed us by a mere 35 miles. I rescued many many birds in the devastated surrounding areas. I learned from other bird owners mistakes on what I should do to ensure my birds well being after a storm.
Some things I have learned that are important. Stock plenty of water for your birds. Dont think that Red Cross will show up in a day or two with water. I picked up a bunch of birds in Arcadia last year because the owners barely had enough water for themselves. In remote places Red cross did not show up with water for four days. Figure at least a gallon for every four birds per day. If there is no electric you will have to mist them to keep them cool. Keep a misting bottle in with the bird storm supplies. Buy plenty of bird food. Store it in heavy plastic water proof bags. Bird owners found out last year that the Humane Society does not supply for birds. Many people had roofs fly off and food was saturated in contaminated water. Don't forget hand sanitizer! That will be the only way to wash your hands. Store all bird supplies in a place where you can find and easily get them when the storm is over. People stuff, furry pet stuff was the first supplies avalible. Bird food and meds were hard to come by. Take a good clear picture of your birds and store in a ziplock bag along with your other supplies along with band number and any other things you would need to identify your bird. Good luck to all in Dennis's path, Lynda

Great info! We have our "Emergency" stocks as well in case of natural disaster including all of our important documents in one place for easy access in the case we need to make like a shepherd and get the flock out of here in a hurry.
I am keeping all the folks that are in harms way in my prayers.

Excellent advice and timed brilliantly. I would suggest that Space Bags would be wonderful. They can really compress clothing, blankets, towels, etc and of course all of your bird seed, first aid stuff, etc.
I hightly recommend investing in a generator. They are really lifesavers. Here in the Northeast, the winters often take out the power and with birds in the house, you HAVE to keep them warm. In the summer, we also lose power and then you have the added problem of keeping the freezer going. Buy a case of water and have it near your preferred entrance. Also, keep your first aid stuff there. Extra batteries, flashlights and pillow cases under every cage. You may not be able to fit all of your bird carriers in your vehicle if you have to scat. Hurricanes can also cause fires and without power, there IS no water to put them out. Good luck. God bless you all. THE OUTLAW

Lynda,
Thanks for the great tips. Although I know you really can't go anywhere in a hurricane, we are making vehicle arrangements in case our roof or house decides to not hold up! My truck won't hold all the travel cages, but hubby's will so he will be taking my truck and his will stay here. The latest report has Dennis heading straight for us; it is a cat 3 now, but will be a 4 by the time it arrives! Hold on to your hats all you Floridians!

The one thing with generators though is have all the gas you are going to need. If power goes there will be no gas avalible. Unfortantley we still do not have a generator. They are very expensive. We survived seven days last year without power. We can do it again.
Space bags are a great idea. We also use contractor bags to protect our computer equipment and other valuables. Lynda Quote:
