Question Nanday Conure

Hey! I was just wondering...
I have been looking to adopt a pet bird, and found a Nanday Conure, but before I do anything I want to do some research on the bird...
If anyone has any tips or information please post it here.
One question I have been wondering about: What are the minimum dimensions of a cage for a Nanday Conure? (Please give in the format Width/Depth/Height in inches).
Thanks.

Nanday conures are active and intelligent. They are also VERY loud. I would suggest you find a local adult nanday and see if you would be willing to put up with the noise at least several times a day, which should be considered acceptable. In my oppinion a cage that's 24"x24" should be the bare minimum for a nanday, 24"x36" would be better.

Nanday's are great birds but you have to be able to handle the noise. They are louder than the sun conures!!! I have a sun conure and I love her to death and to me noise is relative but to other people noise can be bothersome. They are very active and intelligent and they need attention so that they don't get bored. 22 x 24 x 60 will do but if you can go bigger than that is even better. They are alot of fun and just make sure that you provide them with alot of toys so that they don't get bored and you will do OK. Good luck.

Cool

Hey guys.
Thanks for replying.
Great to have the cage dimesions, now I'll look out for something that size.
Looks like this pet will be good for me, as long as the noise doesn't bother my family... (I'll have to talk to them!!).
I guess I will be getting the bird if I can. I should contact the owner...
Anyway, thanks again. And any extra information would be great.
If you have any other information about Nanday Conures, please post here, or email me at drakenza@gmail.com

One of our members has several Nandays-Lynjupiter. She will probably offer advice when she sees this, in the meanwhile she has some gorgeous pics in her album of Nandays-makes me want one too! I am not bird-noise sensitive, but the neighbors may possibly be which holds me back. I live in a (usually) quiet neighborhood. I would check with your neighbors and make sure THEY are not likely to complain, though if they have barking dogs or screaming kids they will not be in a position to complain about your bird.

Nanday Conure

Ah, the Nanday! Very loud but can be very loving birds. I have a friend who adopted one from someone else who basically rescued the bird. Don't know what I did to this Nanday but there are now three people who can handle her. She is a very loving bird. It was so funny when she told me, "I love you" one day and she never said it before. Then she picked up on laughing with me. What a surprise but a pleasant one. I learned to feed her first as that seemed to quiet her down quickly in the morning.
I hope this Nanday adores you!

Hello birdsnthings!
Thank you for your reply... I'm not sure if loud is a good thing...I'll have to see with my family. (This is going to be a family bird... Everyone has to be happy with it...).
I have another offer of a Rainbow Lorikeet, with a 2.5'W x 2.5'D x 5'H cage, all for $100!! (Not bad, eh?).
Anyone know anything about those?

Nandays are one of the quieter conures, though still are quite loud and will scream if their needs are not met.

As far as rainbow lories, they are extremely hyper birds and need a very specialized diet that includes nectar and lots of fresh fruits (not very much of anything else). Because of this diet, they always have the runs (watery poops) that need to be cleaned frequently or else it will stink within days. I don't really suggest for a teen or child to care for one of these birds since they are hyper and harder to care for than some of the other parrots.

If you are interested in getting a conure sized bird, please talk to your family first and let them know your ideas. If you are looking to adopt a bird then it will be your parents who will actually be adopting the bird and should help you in the care of the new family member. I realise that you are atleast 13, and caring for a bird is really a LOT like caring for a toddler who eats just about everything that you eat! Just to let you know however, I've been into parrots since I was 12 and had budgies for over a year before getting bourkes, a turquoisine, a lovebird, then a couple months later a cockaitel, and later on a cherry headed conure (in 2001, when I was 13). The two oldest bourkes and the turq were quite old and have already passed on (one due to a fatal injury). The lovebird is gone, though I still have the birds in my signature (all accept for Clyde which I rehomed which was for the best of him).

Now, I really want you to think about actually adopting a conure. A bird that is up for adoption usually comes with a LOT of baggage and the foster family doesn't always get these problems solved before the bird is adopted out. When I was 13 and I had received Noel, she was biting, screaming, and mutilating herself. This IS NOT what a 13 year old child should have as a child, since I'm speaking from experience. Noel has come a far way, no longer mutilating herself, rarely biting, and only screams in the morning for her food! This took a bit over two years to accomplish though because she had come with so much baggage and I had no previous medium sized bird experience, let alone a bird that was screaming, biting, and mutilating itself! I'm only 17 now....

If you are thinking about adopting the nanday conure, please do so with your family and let them know completely about this bird and what it needs and possible problems if they are to arise.

If you are thinking about the rainbow lory instead, please know that a bird for so cheap could come with a lot of problems as well and there is probably some reason that this person is giving away a bird for so cheap with such a large cage!

Either way, you would need to get the bird a complete bird check-up full with blood panel, etc if you are able to do this to ensure that the bird is healthy when you got him.

Skiddish Nanday

I recently adopted a Nanday from a pet store. The store has a great reputation & only deals in birds.

Zorro was hatched in March 2005. He is a great bird. The noise is predictable and relatively easy to control. He quiets down a few minutes after I leave the room.

One problem is that he will not leave the cage. In the store, once out, he would step up & play, but getting him out of the cage is a fight.

Since bringing him home, I have not pushed the issue. He is adapting well to the new cage and has his favorite perch & toys so he seems OK, but I could use some advice on how to get him to step up & out without making him crazy.

I've been reserving his favorite fruit treats to get him used to my hand. He went from nibbling my fingers and running to taking food from my hand. He is also less tempermental about my hand being in the cage.

I hope I'm doing the right thing and this will continue to improve. It's only been a week.

If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.

You could try leaving the cage door open, or seeing how well he does with a dowel in your hand to remove him from the cage. You could even put a perch right outside the cage, maybe even near some treats he'd have to come out and get. Once out, praise him, tell him how good he was, and see if he'll let you handle him.
