Question Help Guys, Sun Conure constantly squawking?

Hi there,

Im new here and I guess this question has been asked a thousand times before, however every case is different so I will ask none the less.

I have a 1 and a half year old sun conure who will not shut up, I have constantly tried the no attention when you squawk get some when you are quiet routine but it is not working and because there is others in the house who do not understand anything about birdsand get twice as peeved off with it and it makes it all the more difficult because they will feed her to shut her up and go to her.

She squawks mainly for attention and she squawks for her food, just a constant type of beeeep beeeep beeeep beeeep beeeep beeeep beeeep beeeep.

she will also squawk when the cats meow.

Is there anything I can try to get this to stop and anything that others in this house can possibly do to understand a little better and help the situation (no brainer).

We have her outside during the day and she can not see us, should I maybe bring her in so she can see us to start with and knows that we are here.

It is going to get to the pont where the neighbours start complaining because of the noise and we cant have that because we have only just moved here.

What about things like like obtaining a mate for her to amuse her when we can not?

I do not want to get rid of her, she is a great bird with such an attitude equal to mine and she is bonded to me quite closely.

your help is greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks.

She shouldn't be squawking for food unless its in the morning or its around the time you would be giving her some fresh foods or other goodies. Suns and jendays are the louder types of conures that are known for their constant screaming.

You might want to try bringing her into the livingroom where the rest of the family is (be sure that no one smokes in the house if she is inside, and be carefull of other pets, especially if you let her out of the cage). Suns also mature around the age of 2 or so... Some people might suggest using a squirt bottle however I do not, atleast not with the smaller birds.

Getting a second bird will only make things twice as worse, and would probably then force you to get rid of her, along with the new bird, so please just work with her and try to get over this problem!

Well, she's a Conure. They ARE squawkers! But they are sweethearts. Does she have plenty of toys? A gym? Have a regular schedule for her--time that you spend with her in the morning when you get her up for the day. Talk calmly to her. Birds thrive on routine. When she's going to be alone, leave a radio on for her with soft music, or a TV. Whatever you do, don't yell at her. She's claiming you as her flock. She's just being a bird. I'm sure others here have more (and better) advice. Marion

Make sure she's getting enough sleep at night. Truth be told, I've never met a Sun Conure that wasn't a squaker. Conures seem to call just for the joy of doing so, but some things can help. The advice you've gotten thus far is sound. Also make sure she has new toys to keep her busy, even if it's just something you've made.

Thanks for the info guys, Yes I realise that suns and such are noisy but what she is doing seems a little incessant.
she does have toys however I do need to change them around for her(we have just moved interstate). I look around at places like st vinnies and at trash and treasure markets for things like that because you can get great childs toys perfect for birds for as little as 10 cents. I made her gym and re make it every 2 months or so out of natural gum tree branches from out in the bush so that it is a different look and constantly interesting to climb and play on and fresh branches to chew on.
The only schedule she has is her feeding, she gets her soaked seeds at about 9 in the mornings at about 12 I give her fresh fruits, apples, grapes, carrots, whatever else is in the fridge at the time, and then at 3.30 I giver her dry seed mix to tie her over for the night until next morning.
As for play time with that is basicly anytime of the(when she is not sqauwking) and traning time is whenever I walk past the cuboard she will do some sought of trick and say what she is doing, kisses, dance, hello, wing ups.

If you can supply me any more tips that would great as I am still learning, everyday is something new.

Thanks guys

I would use not use a squirt bottle but a hose - on the people who give the bird attention when it screeches. The bird will only learn proper behavior when nobody in thge house reacts to negative behavior. Goof luck

I think squawking *is* proper behavior for a sun conure.

I second that opinion!!!! I have yet to met a sun that is quiet for even a half hour....

Although, if she stops screaming when she is inside, then do bring her in, she might be lonely outside. These birds like high traffic areas. Though, be careful with this as well, because it could invoke screaming whenever you leave her sight if you are almost constantly in sight.

You mention you just moved. Was this an issue before you moved? Where is her cage situated when she is screaming? Is it possible that she feels insecure?

I had not read your post completely before (silly me). I would absolutely take her inside. Bring her out with you when you go out. Birds naturally call for their flock when they are left alone. She may also feel threatened outside having to protect herself from preceived danger.

I agree with everyone that sun conures, as well as other aratinga species, are more prone to screaming and have loud voices but it should be considered as problem screaming if it continues throughout the day. About 15 minutes of loud vocalizing in the morning and evening should be considered acceptable.
