Bird Weights & Weighing

I have decided to become more conscientious about weighing my birds regularly and keeping track of what they are eating. I recently weighed KC and found he has gained about 100 grams over the last year. I believe this is due to a better diet since he shows no other signs of being overweight.

I have made an Excel spreadsheet with each birds name and weekly spaces for the rest of the year. I have also left space for notes about their eating habits.

I weigh them on a gram postage scale with a triangle perch. The perch is a copy of one my vet uses except that his is made of plexiglass to make it easier to disinfect. The postage scale cost about $20 at Staples and the perch I made from scrap plywood and dowels.

Here are the weights this morning:

KC 4YO Male B&G - 1242g
Cyan 1 YO Female B&G - 920g
Baby RFM 12 weeks - 437g
Ozzie 1YO Male Red Sided Eclectus - 466g
Nubi 4YO Male Lilac Crown Amazon - 332g
Gracie 3YO Female CAG - 414g
Elvis 3YO Female Meyers - 92g
Squirt 14 weeks Black Headed Caique - 135g

I just thought I would post this as a reminder to weigh your birds if you don't already and to maybe weigh them more often if you already are. Weighing is good way to keep an eye on your bird's health.

Interesting, I don't have any 'Toos, but because of their size I just thought M2s would be heavier than that.

Scott, Ginger goes back and forth, the heaviest I remember is 1125g I think, I would have to go look in journal. She is really male, and not any bigger than our macaws, just lloks it because of shape I guess...LOL!!!! She is plenty heavy, she wiggles alot on the scale so it's hard to get a true weight!

My Skye(Parrotlet) is still 28 gms. He went UP one gram once, LOL. But, as Nancy says, it's because of a grape he ate!! LOL he really does not like grapes, but it was funny anyway
28 and holding for a year now...Oh, I forgot, he gets weighed every Monday morning.

Little Lily has gained one grain since she came home February 4th and has maintained that weight every since - a wee 29 grams.

I used to be so faithful about this but I haven't weighed mine in months. I'll try to get to it tomorrow. So far, comparing their recorded weights to the ones posted here, mine all seem about average. My babies just got fed and are settling down for the night.

Our Ollie, the CAG, gets weighed every 2 weeks now after we just got burned out on weighing every day. He weighs within a gram or 2 of 500 everytime. I think most of his weight, even after the morning poop, is the remainder of the bullstuff he has left for us for the day.
