The breeder I chose...

After research Pionus extensively, as well as Pionus breeders, I think I have come to a decision regarding the breeder. I looked for a breeder who was well-known, attentive to the babies, fed the parents (and weaning babies) a superb diet, and had above-average hygiene practices.

My breeder of choice is Aves International. From what I have read and heard they have a perfect track record, take great care in their babies and breeders, and are worth their weight in gold.

I have talked with Aves and we really "clicked". Its a match! They also have Maximillians in almost every stage of development, so there is no rush to get a baby. After we get a few things worked out here regarding Mango's death we'll be very excited to welcome the new little Pi into our hearts.

what a shame that you couldn't find one in rescue in your area.

That would be cool if there actually was a rescue in my area. And with two Pionus available for adoption in the United States, there was just no way we could do it.

Congratulations Blake! I think it is wonderful. Let us know when the little one arrives.

Blake:

Once again, you've done it right. Aves has a terrific reputation. I think that GOOD breeders deserve our business.

The breeder I choose......

Blake,
I have to interject here. Although you have read and feel comfortable and talking with them you are comfortable.....did you ask for a vet reference and call them?
When I screen breeders to purchase from, this is the one think I look for and I make the call. What the vet tells me is how I make a decision on whether or not to purchase a bird from a paricular breeder.

Birdsnthings,

I have talked with people who have purchased from them, and they included what their vet's said (of the four people I have talked with, all of them said their vets gave a great review). But I never thought of calling the vet directly. Very good idea! When I get back this afternoon I'll write them an e-mail and get his/her information. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks Nancy and Cathy. I'm very happy with them, too.
