Parrots at Play Calendar needs your input

hi guys....
as you know the judging for the 2006 calendar is underway. a big THANK YOU to everyone who submitted a photo of your loved one!
There are some beautiful pictures that were sent in!!!
As soon as I get the info as to who the 12 winners are from the 5 judges, I will post them!

However, there is one other aspect of the calendar I am asking for your help with. We are adding some parrot trivia to the calendar, and was wondering if anyone had any they could share. I have one from Fransicus, that will be submitted. However, with all the members we have here, and the species experts(the every day self taught people we have come to count on....Beaks, Outlaw, Graeh, Dayna, Monica, Joel,to name a few of the many we have here)...got any ya wanna share?

What are you looking for? Snippets, stories, things they do to drive you nuts?
Let me know and I'll write something up. Is there a limit as to the word count?
Like may be the story of Ruby copying what she heard on the radio for instance?

Last year we had Mark Marrone have helpful hints each month. This year we want to enclude trivia such as the one Fransicus came up with...
Its kinda a Q & A forum....here is the one from Fransicus..........

Here is one:
Where is the only flightless parrot found?
In New Zeland. It is known as the Kakapo or "owl parrot". It is also nocturnal and solitary. They make booming sounds to attract a mate during the breeding season.

However, what I would like from you Mike, is maybe a short poem (ish) writing about birds, maybe even greys, for me to submit on your behalf in the event there is room for something like that.
you always come up with such beautiful writings, and Donna might find a poem appropriate.
This years theme is longevity.
There is a 70year + poster parrot.
There is about a week before it is sent to press.

Thanks for your offer, and I understand if ya are stumped and cant come up with anything.....not like I'm putting pressure on ya

I saw your post about the lost grey...
What about trivia about how far different species can travel per day?

Ok here's my Poem. It's not the greatest I've ever written, but it's what poped into my head. I'll see if I can come up with another one maybe, maybe a little shorter, although "short" is real hard for me to deal with, lol, I'll see what else pops into my head.
So without further ado, here 'tis.

A Good Life

I know what your Grandpa did
And your papa too
When I was hatched from my egg
Back in forty two

I saw him kiss your mom
Way before they wed
The big day of the Prom
And all the things they said

The day that you were born
I was there to see you cry
Then I, in my loyalties, was torn
When you looked me in the eye

Ill live to see you marry
And have a kid or three
But before I grow too weary
And life will set me free

Theres something I must say to you
Before I spread my wings and fly
Theres nothing I would change or do
A life of love and peace had I

I loved your Grandpa and your Dad
And of course I loved you too
And all the good times that Ive had
Starting that day in forty two

What is the largest parrot?
The largest parrot is the kakapo parrot, which also happens to be flightless. Typically, they weigh around 8 lbs, twice that of a hyacinth macaw. Hyacinth macaws tend to be the largest flighted parrot weighing in around 3-4lbs, though some greenwings have been known to outweigh them.

What is the smallest parrot?
The pygmy parrot is the smallest parrot which is about 3 1/2 inches long.

In the wild, is there such a thing as a black parrot?
Most people think of parrots as a rainbow full of colors, or even as white birds. In the wild, and in captivity, there are vasa parrots, and black cockatoos. They are hardly known in captivity, and hardly known to the rest of the world since they are so rare to actually see one.

I LOVE the poem Mike! I think you did a great job and quite appropriate for a calendar that will be focusing on the longevity of parrots. Lord, I hope my parrots will be able to feel that way about my grandchildren.
