Emma Lynn's big day
Emma Lynn, my disabled little grey girl will be going to meet Dr Karen Rosenthal at the U of Pa tomorrow am. It is a well birdy visit. Dr Rosenthal is among one of the top avian vets in the country, and is featured in Bird Talk this month discussing PDD.
Now, My avian vets, Dr Wade, and Dr Brown, are used to me being very hands on and in the middle of everything.... I hope Dr R doesnt mind I also must admit, my little girl has health insurance. I broke down and got her VPI just for catistrophic stuff. Many of you know I have spent thousands on my guys, and with Emma;s disablilty, I dont know what that will lead to in teh future. This give me somewhat of a piece of mind knowing I have a LITTLE help should I need it.

Emma Lynn's visit went well. Dr R said she is in beautiful feather and health.
Dr R would like to take xrays to see Emma's skeletal deformity, because it is most likely that Emma will have arthritis some time in her future. The Xrays would be for future reference. However, I am not really sold on this idea, since Greys do not handle the anesthesia well, and I do not think the risk is worth it. I need to find out if the course of treatment would be any different down the road by compairing the Xrays. I will write to her later this week to ask my questions. I will also write to my other 2 board certified vets to ask thier opinion. DO NOT TAKE THIS AS QUESTIONING THE PROFESSIONAL. I do agree it would be a good idea, however am not willing to take the risk of loosing her. It is differnt if there is no choice with the anesthesia because of medical issues, but this is just for future reference. My Sampson went under at least 20 times in 6 weeks. Without this he could not breath. My Otis also went under for Xrays, and was ok. Sydney too had surgery on his preengland, and was under. He did fine................. However, I was with a friend when her grey did not wake up. This makes a lasting impression on ones mind, and heart. Also, after loosing Sampson Bell, should anything happen to Sydney or Emma, I would completely loose my mind. I would like to hear from others who have greys with this disability, and see if any of them had thier birds xrayed, and for what reason. So Emma did well, and only got car sick on the way there. She was fine on the way home. She ate like a piglet, on the way there and home. Mom on the other hand, only had 3.5 hours sleep the night before, and had to come home to nap...... ![]()

Yay Emma Lynn! I feel so sad for her getting car sick though - I do too and it feels absolutely terrible!
Kiss her little grey head for me.

Emma Lynn's big day
I understand your concern on this one. My Blooper had an injured wing when he first came to me and the vet did need to do an xray. He did just fine, not once but twice. Re reran another xray two weeks later. Vets would not do this to a bird they feel may not come out of it, like if they are too weak. Other birds I had were also put under for xrays for Aspergelosis. I wouldn't let them redo the xray on one a year later as I was afraid it would traumatize one of them more. They were very understanding on that one.
You should talk to the vet more on this one before making a decision. Also ask them their opinion on this subject as well. |

My vet did tell me of the Risks involved, and I must sign a consent saying if something goes wrong, I wont hold them responsible, and that I am aware of the possiblility of her passing on because of the procedure. Now the other thing to consider,as the vet said, is if she has some kind of disability we CAN see....how do we know her heart, or something else is not malformed and she will pass on because of this durring the Xrays. Its all scarey. The main thing is I am not willing to take the risk. if it was 100% safe I would say go for it. I think I am more willing to say, should GOD FORBID something go wrong in the future and she needs to be put under then,....then take the Xrays. I am not up for unnessisary risks.....I lost one Grey(to Aspergillosis) that haunts me and hurts me to this day. I am really torn....but my heart and head are saying no. Thank you for your reply.... Aunt Regina and Aunt Michele.....Emma got lots of kisses and I told her one was from each of ya..... Now Michele ...ya get yer butt on home ere....and meet Miss Emma.

Dr R was very nice, and very informative. It was nice to have her treat me with respect also because of the same people we know. She knows and Respects my other avian vets very much. She was very down to earth, and spent alot of time just talking with us. I'm glad to have her in my arsenal to keep my babies in good health. One vet you will hear of some time in the future, who has a wonderful Career infront of her, as well as one of the nicest people you will ever meet, is Dr Laura Wade ABVP dipl. From Buffalo NY area. Melissa, one of our members here is VERY lucky to have her close by. I would not hesitate for a second should I needed a vet, to make the 500 mile treck to Buffalo to have her taking care of my baby. (good thing my brother in law has a private plane, EH??) So everyone keep that name in your memory....Dr Laura Wade will be right up there with Ritchie,Harrison, and Rosenthal someday......
