Lightbulb animal auction web site, take a look and tell us your thoughts!

Hi guys,

some of you may have seen but alot of you probably have not, whilst reading through my monthly parrot maggazine there was a small article on an animal auction web site names www.anibid.com, they sell all soughts on there from horses to snakes and frogs and also are feathered friends. I do not know what to make of this site weather it is good or bad .

take a look and tell us your thoughts.

My mother taught me that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. I will say I didn't like what I saw!

Ditto on the sentiments. But what we might want to do is join none the less and e-mail the ones auctioning off their birds and either invite them here and/or let them in no uncertain terms know that we find what they are doing very objectionable.
They have a Grey breeding pair that is going for $1500,00????

The auctions had at the bottom of each one weather or not you are licecnsed and bla bla bla, but does that really make a difference, when you get your bird do you get a veterinary clearance, health check with it?

I guess if people dont mind buying diseased birds that could possibly damage populations already in the home or aviary or if you dont mind buying wild caught and smuggled birds then it is a great place to go, however I think I will continue to pay that little bit extra and buy my birds healthy from reputable breeders and aviaries.

It is also not a good thing because of the impulse buying factor. People may very well see something on there they love buy it without any research into it and once they have got it have no idea about how to care for it and the negatives of the bird and soon enough the bird is in a new home.

I guess it had to happen sooner or later though didnt it, the net is an ever expanding place.

I still don't see how people could buy a bird they haven't met. The few I looked at appear to be overpriced by American standards. I would only buy a bird direct from a breeder anyway and preferably one who is in Parrot Society and has a good reputation for healthy birds.

Hi Tiki, I bought Mojo without meeting him. But I did do a very through check on his breeder, and spent along time talking to him to find out just how he was raising his birds. I also spoke to some people who had also bought pet birds from him, how their temperment was, their personality etc. I belive you can buy a companion bird without meeting them, but you have to ask alot of questions and recomendations from other bird parents are very important. I can't imagine a sweeter bird then Mojo, and I am so happy that we found each other. A good breeder is a very important thing. There are so many dodgy people out there!

Well, here's my spin on purchasing any bird you haven't met: you takes your chances. Even wonderful breeders have birds that simply won't warm up to a particular individual. Shopping for birds, in my opinion, really should be a bit more intimate. It really is all about eye contact and a mutual consent. It sometimes works out, that's been established, but often doesn't. The breeder can only make it understand that humans will be around doing certain things. They cannot guarantee a love connection.

You can say whatever you please about petshops, but the ONE advantage you have there is that you usually get to hold and interact with your bird and can do so for quite some time before you purchase it. The negative is that other people can too and that can cause problems with the bird. I'm old fashioned and DO believe at love at first sight. Of course, it has to be the BIRD that loves you.

Nancy, I on the other hand don't belive in love at first sight. I belive that some things will take time to blossom. Some birds in a pet shop can absolutely adore you while you are in the store, but would like to take a bite at you when they come home. I don't really think anything can garantee a love connection. I agree that there is a certain advantage to meeting a bird before you bring it home with you, but I don't think its the only way to find the fid for you. Plenty of people buy birds from bird fairs where they have only met them for a few minutes, some personality traits you can't discover after a few minutes or even a few hours.

Katie:

Then we shall agree to disagree I'm very luck, for its pretty rare that any bird refuses my advances. However, it always saddens me when someone does their homework, prepares and happily anticipates the arrival of their new bird only to discover that its not a good match. I suppose we all work for the stand point of what has worked out in our observation.

To put it in my husbands vernacular "there's an ass for every seat".
