Suggestions

Hi guys and girls,
Sam and I are thinking about getting another fid around the end of the year, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for birds that would be compatable with Mojo our gcc? I want to start researching soon but we aren't in any hurry to have another fid, but any help would be appreciated.

A cockatiel, another conure same size as Mojo, or something similar you might look into... or even princess of wales?

I too suggest getting something similarly sized.... and if you get another conure, please get them sexed and get the same gender if you don't want babies!

I saw a GCC and what I think was a Dusky Headed Conure together when I was at the vet last week, oh my they were so cute together, best of buddies but both very attentive to their owner. Yet they were cuddled up next to eachother on his shoulder, just as close as they could get. It was adorable!

You may also want to seriously look at tiels, other types of small conures, caiques (these guyse are quite a bit heaftier though)..... anything you have your eye on? Maybe we can help you research?

While I am keeping my interest open, I think we have narrowed it down to several smaller species. And since it will be me who spends the most time with the new fid (my husband works all day everyday) I think I have the final say in what species we choose. At the moment we are thinking about quakers, teils another conure or pow. I really loved those pictures of the pow that basketbagely posted, but I can't seem to find much infomation on them. My husband would love a quaker, but I am concerned that being a bit larger then Mojo might be a bit rough. I wouldn't house them toghter certainly, but I would like to eventually have them out at the same time. Anyone who has a gcc with other birds care to tell what they are and how they get along?

here's a link that I think either small onion or Monica gave me. I also bought a used book from Amazon about Australian long tailed parakeets. Most of the stuff is very general info, I'll look for the other web site I have somewhere too. If you search for "Princess Parrot" instead of Princess of wales, you seem to come up with more!

so far Calypso is very quite, his chirps are adorable! and he is pleasant with all the other fids I have. He eats incredibly well! fruits and veggies more than his baby seeds.

One thing that I wasn't expecting & not a big deal at all, is his feathers have a much different texture than my other guys. not as fluffy, more sleek.

Smallonion has a POW too, maybe she can tell you more about Humphreys personality and eating habits.

I just love mine. and of course I love my tiel too! He's my special buddy.

have fun researching!

I think a poicephalus (senegal, meyers or jardin), pionus or cockatiel or another conur would probably be a good choice.

I have a caique and they do not get along with other birds, so it is not a good choice . They will attack another bird in the flash of an eye . Scooter has individual play time with us while the others are chilling out on the boings and playgyms. She has to be returned to her cage because she won't stay on the boings or playgyms .

I have a senegal and cockatiel and will be getting soon a maxi pionus and these have good temperments. The thing to remember unless you get another GCC or something similar it is not guarantee that the two birds of different species will get along. I have seen meyers and tiels do very well with GCC as well as suns, jendays, peachfront conures do well with them as well. The only problem with getting an aratinga is you can expect the loudness level of you GCC to increase.

Our tiels are pretty laid back and are fairly harmonic with the rest of the flock we have.

Cathy, in Australia you have to mortgage your house to get a Poicephalus or Pionus, they are over $8000 each! A Princess or cockatiel would work, Quakers are territorial and jealous but maybe if you get a baby and raise him with Mojo so they grow up together. Actually, I am attracted to Green cheeks, Princesses and Malabar Parrots (a type of ringneck) but I will be on vacation in Nov so wouldn't add any new bird until after then.

It really annoys me that out major bird fair is in May which is well after the breeding season, but you can always ring a few breeders and go to their houses to pick one out. The best thing is to get a newly weaned baby-make sure he can eat on his own. The breeders here are pretty good about not selling unweaned babies to the public. Cockatiels are very mellow and won't attack other birds, I don't know how agressive Greencheeks are. I can put Chaska in the tiel's room to play on the gym, she gets along OK (meaning won't attack anyone) but she gets jealous if she sees a tiel sitting on me. She has her own cage though.

Yeah, I would love a Pionus, but no way am I in a position to spend that sort of money. My husband would kill me for a start.
Before I got Mojo I made a few calls around looking for breeders of weaned hand raised babies, I was suprised that a few offered me babies that were still on 2-3 feeds a day even after hearing that I had no experience whatso ever.
Talking with Sam last night we have narrowed it down to 3. Quaker (his choice) Pow or teil. I heard someone say not to get an IRN when you have a gcc. Can someone tell me why this is, apart from size?
Thanks guys this is really helping us choose.
