Smile Liner for bird gym?

Hi,

I have a bird gym for my parakeet that he loves and spends a lot of time on.

The problem is, by the end of the day (or even a few hours), there are lots of bird droppings on the base of the gym, which is where he likes to play. It is made of a wood particle board. It seems so unsanitary to me. I clean it with paper towels at the end of the day, but it still just doesn't seem like a clean sanitary place for him to be. He sits on the floor of the gym, where the droppings are.

The gym is Pink Parrot's Play Arounds playpen.

Any suggestions on what I can do to make this more sanitary? Are there liners for playpens?

Thanks so much!

You can pour corn cob bedding in the tray. It's absorbent and scoopable.Just make sure your bird isn't eating it.Also, some clowns enjoy flinging it.

I use wood chips ... the problem is the flinging, but at least they don't try to eat it as they would corn. Also use newspaper.

Corn Cob bedding is a no-no as it is a good source for mold to grow and if the little guy eats the stuff it can cause for more serious problems. News paper and paper towls for a budgie stand are fine.

Myself I wouldn't use corn cob bedding ,I just use plain paper towel or newspaper and at the end of the day throw it away and clean base with vinegar mix with water, hope this helps.

I agree! No Corn Cob bedding! Newspaper is cheap and works great!

Thanks to all for your replies. I will play around with newspaper (hopefully his little feet won't get all black) and paper towels (afraid they'll move around and fly away when he flies)....

A little late with my reply but I wanted to add that corn cob is the worst! I wish it would be removed from the market.

There was a story about an amazon who had corn cob substrate but it was replaced by newspaper when the owner learned it was dangerous. When the bird died about a year later, a necropsy was performed. The vet found corn cob in the crop even though corn cob hadn't been used in a year! It cannot be ingested and is very dangerous!

Paper towels, newspaper, or wood chips are the best.

.

i couldnt agree with you more!!!!

Corn Cob Bedding is PROVEN to cause Apsergillosis, an often deadly respiratory disease in birds.

I use paper towels. on the smaller playgyms, newspaper on the larger ones that they wont reach the paper.
