Guided Bird Walking Tour - October 6th
Saturday, October 6
Guided Tour with Randy Schutz* Time: 10 am - 1: 30 pm Meeting Place: Prospect Park at Grand Army Plaza. We will meet on the far southeast side of the plaza next to the road that goes into the park (no cars use it on Saturday). The tour ends at this location. We'll enter the park, following signs and sounds of birds, heading first to the Vale of Cashmere. We'll continue on into the Midwood, from where we'll visit the stream and decide whether to go north into the Ravine or south into the Lullwater, dependent on what we find. We may take in Lookout Hill or spend time at the Lake. The walk will take place just after the end of the flurry of Fall migration, so we'll be looking for stragglers, late migrants and overwintering birds, both those that stay all year as well as those that have come in for the season. There's no place to get food or drink, so if the weather is warm, do bring something. There is almost always a farmer's market directly in front of the park where a snack can be obtained if you want one. Bring binoculars if at all possible. Directions: Take the #2 or 3 train to Grand Army Plaza. If you are coming from Manhattan, you can take trains to the Atlantic Ave/Pacific Ave station and switch there for the 2 or 3, but check carefully for weekend routing changes. The train station is at the north end of the plaza. There is only one entrance/exit from the station, so continue walking in the same direction as the stairs point you. You will find yourself making a great arc to the right skirting the edge of the plaza. At the south end there is a complex series of lights and crosswalks, but the park will be obvious off to the left, and the entrance is marked by a road going into the park. Please RSVP: nybirdwalks@yahoo.com Cost: free for members; all others $5. *Randolph Schutz has been birding since the 1980's. Trained as a pediatritian, he quickly moved into psychiatry, then psychotherapy, and currently works as a coach. He writes poety, speaks French, paints watercolors, is fascinated by the workings of the human mind, entranced by everything living and loves birds, though when there's an interesting plant around he'll head for that, too. He has birded extensively around the metropolitan area, birds Central Park regularly and frequently, and has led both formal and informal birding groups for years. He birds in all seasons and most weathers, and while he loves unusual birds he's been known to be hypnotized by titmice and sparrows. Sponsored by the NY Bird Club |
