noise level of african greys and price?

Hi there guys.

Could any of you please tell me how much roughly it would cost to obtain a grey in australia and how noisy these birds are. I have read a lot of contradicting info on them and thought I would ask the experts, the owners of these beautiful birds?

thanks guys.

Well, my TAG picked up a naughty habit in one of her previous houses, so she can be VERY loud when she wants attention. It's a very high pitched shriek, so if you're living in an apartment, a grey's noises would more than likely drive the neighbors up the walls. I know it does that to me, and I actually love her...

Each bird varies, and if trained can be taught to not scream or to use some other sound that is much quieter than screaming. As to how much they cost in Australia, I've heard that they go for $8,000, which is right up where some of the lower costing macaws are at... however don't quote me on that! I know that the macaws can easily go for $10,000, but don't know for sure as far as the greys go!

Well I have a Congo and a Timneh and a Cockatoo. If I had to compare them to the Cockatoo they would be as quiet as a church mouse . I find that my Grey's are basically quiet as far as loud noises, they talk allot and have their phone ringing sessions but I wouldn't say they were loud. As far as cost where you live I couldn't guess for I have seen some pretty high prices for birds there.

I think that the greys are among the most easy of the birds to live with. They like to chatter and whistle, but rarely scream. In fact, short of injury, mine have never screamed.

I believe that Tiki once said greys were about $8,000 in Oz. I have no idea how you would find one for sale there. Perhaps she'll see your post and respond.

Our Grey is a big Talker and Whistler of Songs. She never screams, however her voice is loud as she tries to keep up with her Macaw Sisters :-)

Well....I have had 6 greys.
Otis, the Timneh, did not scream, was rather quiet and polite.

Sampson, Congo, Talked continuosly, even whispered. Never Screamed, Growled, and you would never know bird was in the house. You would have thought he was a human talking.

Bubba, Congo, was a loud whistler. Nothing annoying, just whistling tunes.

Stirling, Congo can be loud. He has a loud warning screach that is like a pic axe in your temple.....He is however, wild cought.

Sydney, Congo, is VERY vocal. Every noise, whistle, scream you can imagine, and some you never thought possible.

Emma Lynn, Congo,Screams when she doesnt get her way, or her pop pop leaves the room. Other than that, she is usually quiet, except when she is singing to the radio. That is tolerable.

Now, i have not lived with any Too's for a long period of time, nor have I had a macaw in my home. I cant tell you the noise difference between the greys-too-macaws.
I have lived with several Amazons, Tiels, conures, canaries, keets, and a caique. The Greys top any noise that has come out of any of thies other species.

Lisa:

Trust me, the macaws and toos are 10 times louder than a really loud grey. I have 5 macaws and 2 greys. With the exception of them trying to trick me with telephone rings and timer sounds, they are completely within tolerable noise levels.

Maybe that's Chiquita's problem... she was wild caught, too.

I have no greys - however, I have visited a few homes who have greys and the noise level is nothing compared to what goes on in this household with the cockatoos -
