Unfortunately we won't be bringing Gizmo home next month. I didn't even have a choice.
When I went to see him yesterday, I found out that he was missing his toe nails. This is something the breeder never mentioned to me. I thought about the situation and tried talking it out with several people. I just worried about how well he would grip his perch. A good fall could really cause a problem. I was also worried about his confidence lacking nails. But apparently, the bottom line was the fact that he was a sweet bird. And I shouldn't worry about his toe nails. Well, while I was at work, the breeder sold the bird before he even talked to me about it. I never said I didn't want the bird. I just worried about his "handicap" (so to speak). So, for now, there won't be a Gizmo in my life. But I'm going to continue searching. |

Okay...they sold him out from under you??? Why??? Did you have deposit down? Did you say you didn't want him?
...I don't know what everyone else said about his nails... don't think you have to worry about missing toe nails too much...even missing toes, it's amazing what parrots can manage missing bits of their feet...did he have any of his 8 nails?... ...we have a one-footed finch - I deliberately bought him when I saw, worried that he'd end up axed if the pet store noticed (which they hadn't)...and he's absolutely fine!!! If a finch can manage with one foot...a parrot can manage without a couple of nails... This is a poor picture, but if you look close at the cordon bleu you'll see he has NO toes on his left foot... ...I feel very bad for you...hope you find another bird to share your home with...

Well crap Don, I too am so sorry to hear that.
Take Joel up on his offer, he comes highly regarded by all of us and is one of the nicest guys here on the boards to boot. I really don't think you would go wrong going that direction. If only I were closer and had more room I would snatch them up in a heartbeat. But then again I am a glutton for punishment, lol.

One of the reasons its important for a bird to have at least SOME nails, especially a grey, is so that it won't fall. Greys have very prominent keel bones and if they do fall, they can do serious damage to their breasts. Just ask Jer. She has been waiting for her grey to heal from a similar accident.
Alternately, to leave them fully flighted means you have to be extremely vigilant about your home and folks going in and out of it. Frankly, Don did nothing wrong. I'm a bit surprised with the way this particular breeder handled this, however. Surely a prospective parront should be able to ask questions freely of their breeder without anyone getting their panties in a twist. I think that Fate may have played a hand in this and I feel that things will ultimatley resolve in Don's favor. I hope so. He was a total gentleman throughout this whole ordeal. I know I'd happily recommend him. Frankly, I'd rather send Joel the business for he will certainly stay on board with any problems or questions that may arise. Good breeders do that.

...I'm not suggesting one or several missing nails is ideal, because of course it's not...all I'm saying is that it's not an insurmountable disability (if you can call it that)...
...other than my own exp. with our finch...I've met/talked with a couple of owners now of toeless parrots (toes being bitten off, frozen off, accidents, etc.)...and most manage very well, not needing much in the way of adjustments... ...I was pleasantly surprised...

Hi Lisa, sorry to confuse you!! Yes Gizmo was Joey originally. After meeting him yesterday, Tim and I decided that he sounded like Gizmo from the Gremlins (movie). We like the name, so I'm sure it'll stick. |

WHAT Don!!!!!!???????? You changed his name from ****Joey****
to Gizmo !!!!!!!!.....J/K but it is strange that the male I have available I did already name Joey (honestly-I swear) for another possible keeper back when I was handfeeding him. He was passed over though due to that person having second thoughts of taking in another responsibility at that time. Sooooo, Gizmo sounds cool to me if ya wind up by any chance getting him .....I won't even mention the girls names so not to influence you in any way should you choose one of them.....Don't even ask or I'll fib.
