Exclamation non-stick cookware

Hello all,
Sorry it's been a while. I'm right in the middle of a move and have little time between house-hunting and packing. I do have a concern that's been nagging at me for a while now. I'm aware that non-stick cookware can kill a bird, but how? Under what conditions is it deadly? Is it by eating food cooked on teflon, or does it emit fumes? And if it does emit fumes, what is a safe distance for the bird to be at? Are we talking not in the same room at all, or just not right up near the pan? Some specifics would be appreciated.
Thanks to all who reply!

Teflon emits fumes anytime its heated. Unless you have a bird in a vacuum or its own air circulating system, then its always unsafe. Additionally, teflon breaks down over time worsening the problem.

Frankly, its unsafe for humans and there is currently serious attempts to have it removed. And, to top it off, now it also is appearing in fabrics and even showing up in shower cleaning agents. Its bad.

I think there's an article in the archives titled "Are you smarter than Teflon?". That pretty much gives you the information you need. If you have any kind of Teflon heating appliances or cookware, you need to choose : Do you want a bird or a frying pan? Do you need a non-stick iron? Why does a hairdryer even have Teflon in the first place? At the end of the day, your bird is at your mercy. After all, you brought him home and placed him in a cage. I always think of canaries in coal mines when folks start talking about Teflon.
