Mickey and Mallory Update

Well, not to take over the boards with threads started by me, but I thought you all might want to know that Mickey and Mallory are home!

They went into the double cage I got them and were very interested in the new toys and new space. Much screaming and complaining was done when they discovered they were seperated by the bars though.

Since Thursday, they have decided I am allowed to give food and water without being in danger of losing fingers, but I am NOT to touch or attempt to touch them. Hubby on the other hand, may touch them, scratch their heads and rub their beaks, but he is NOT to attempt to put his hand or arm in the cage. He may also administer their oral meds. The kids are not allowed in the room or there is much commotion.

We're taking it slow. When they get used to us, we'll move on to getting them in and out of the cage.

They did however express great interest when they heard the girls welcoming Simon and Sam yesterday. There was a lot of calling back and forth between the rooms.

It sounds like things are going very well. You may find that since they are now for the first time in their own private areas, they feel compelled to defend their new space. That's a good thing.

You must have a very big heart. I commend you.

The thing that surprised me the most was that when Hubby approached to give them their meds (in a syringe) that both of them turned up their head and opened their beaks without a bit of protest. As long as he did it though the bars and did not open the cage door. Very strange. I'd love to know what their life was like before.

Should I discourage the defense of their space, or just let them be? I don't want them to think its ok to attack when someone approaches and opens the door. And I am going to have to open it sooner or later. Suggestions?

Thanks, Nancy, I don't think its anything that a lot of others here on the board, including you, wouldn't do if put in the same position.

LOL! I promise, I will go and buy a new digital next weekend! I didn't want to spend the money before, with them being at the vets.

They really aren't much to look at right now though. Mostly nekkid and sort of skinny. I expect they'll be beautiful before long though.

Dana:

I think you should insist that they do whatever you need to do, but I also think its great that they have now identified their own individual spaces. Often, when two have been caged for a long time, one dominates the other. When they are seperated, the lesser of the two blooms and actually becomes stronger. It happened here with my boys.

OH How Wonderful!!! Geez, I was wondering what had happened with the two babes. Im still trying to learn to get around this board, its huge. It sounds like everything is going very well. You are such a wonderful person. Those birds are so lucky it was your doorstep they were left on.
