poop color

What a topic

What is considered to be a normal color? Or does it vary with each bird?

I've noticed that Scarlett's is greenish and white in varying degrees of solid/liquid. This morning when I uncovered her I noticed that it looks more brown-red. I had her outside in her cage for several hours yesterday afternoon/evening and during that time I removed her bowl of fresh foods so the flies wouldn't be attracted. She had a field day on her dry mix (which she usually only occasionally eats) throughout the afternoon and there was almost nothing left in the dish by the time she came inside.

Could that be what caused the change? I have not yet learned enough about bird anatomy but my understanding was that they move foods pretty quickly through their digestive system and then eliminate the waste immediately.

sorry for such a gross topic.

Scarlet will likely have greener and looser stools than many other species because she should be on a fresh diet. There is a higher percentage of water in fresh foods, so that's why the stools tend to be looser. Also, in the hot weather, they simply drink more.

Pelleted diets that don't include colored pellets will normally produce brownish droppings, more uniformly shaped and less wet.

poop color

There could have been something in the seed mix that had dye in it to cause the color to change. It should straigten out on it's own.
My too loves the Senic pellets soaked. He likes to eat the red ones but then has matcing color poops for a bit.

That is an excellent article. Thank you for the link.

I'm inclined to think it was all of the dry mix she ate yesterday that caused the color change. Things now are looking green again now that she's had her breakfast.
