Hmmm. I would figure the only way to kill everything would be either to dissinfect by washing or using heat. If there are no plastic components, you could probably put them in the oven on a fairly low setting but I'm only guessing. The other option would be to steam them, but you could still have some color transfer.

I only buy stuf I know I can clean, therefore not many rope things. I don't worry about colours running on wooden toys, as matter of fact, I prefer getting most of the dye out before giving it to the fids anyhow. Detergent takes care of most, if not all, viruses, and you can put wood things in the oven at 200 degrees for a half hour or so.

Go ahead and disinfect them, the bird doesn't care about the color anyway. That's better than unknown critters on them.
