The larger the bird the louder they are (greater lung capacity). However, for good apartment birds, senegals, meyers, jardines (poicephalaus--sp? family) are generally quiet and do not rouse the neighbors. Greencheek conures tend to be quiet as well and tend to get along well with other species of birds. My senegal is on the quiet side, but does have a shrill call when she is excited or boxing her shadow or playing aggressively. My senegal does not get along well with our other birds; hwoever, I've been told they can, but I've yet to read about one that did. Meyers of the same species class are also real sweet and quiet and where our senegal is a one person bird, they do not tend to do so--although it can happen with any bird.. Our senegal chose us. Unlike my caique you cannot hear my senegal outside our home. Another quiet species is the pionus. Our maxi is very quiet. Even when she is squawking you cannot hear her. She is very quiet. In the store she got along well with the other birds in the aviary with her. She is not overly agressive and gets along well with everyone in the family including my child.
If you are looking for a small to meduim sized parrot that will do well in an apartment setting, my recommendations are: 1. Senegal/Meyers/Jardines/Caped Parrots 2. Pionus 3. Greencheek conures, Maroon-Bellied Conure The thing to remember the more birds you have the louder the noise can be as they will compete with each other. Let us know what you decide to do about your next bird.

My quietest bird by far is my male ekkie. I am not sure about other ekkies, as he is the only one I have ever owned. My Charlie could easily do well in an apartment setting. When he talks, it is in a soft voice and he never, ever screams. He is a real jewel.

I know you're thinking about a medium sized bird...but stay away from 'toos! LOL My little boy screamed for two hours straight yesterday and it doesn't seem to be getting much better, but I'm hoping....!
Cockatoos are so loud that you could literally hear my baby a couple houses away. I came to the conclusion last night that although I LOVE my fid with all my heart and I will not give up on him...SHOULD something happen to him (God FORBID...) I wouldn't do another cockatoo. They are too much like human toddlers...for triple the time span! He's louder than all get out and that doesn't even hit how much of a handful he is! When it comes to birds after my baby...I'll wait and inherit my mother's CAG and her Lutino pearl 'tiel. That'll be enough. LOL Good luck! Misty P.S I don't know much about the Sengal's temprament...but at the petshop I go to, the little guy they have in there is a real sweetie! I thought about getting one of those but then thought...naaaaaa. Not with my Lucky! LOL He'd get too jealous!

I agree totally - cockatoos aren't the bird for you! We get ours going and they are all competing with each other, and believe it or not, we actually love to hear them carry on!~
Conures can also be very loud........... My little quaker is also quite loud when he wants to be. He is very cage territorial (looooooong story), but he actually makes more noise, the longest, thany any of the others. He does whistle Andy Griffith!

Some other birds to look into:
Grass parakeets (from the cheap bourke up to the turquoisines, scarlet chested, etc)... There are also red rumps, or linnies... some people may even suggest Princess of Wales... Out of my own birds, in general, I'd say that my Noel is the quietest, however she doesn't 'fit' into the general discription of what conures are like... She normally only screams when she wants fresh food and water (usually in the mornings, unless someone dirties it up before the next morning), or if she wants to go where Casey is, or have Casey back... The next quietest would be the bourkes... I often-times refer them to be a lot like finches, except in an array of colors as a parrot. They come in pinks, greys, yellows, blues, greens... and although they are not normally kept as pets but more as aviary birds, if tamed they can be quite social! They don't of course normally have an interest in scritches or petting...

My 4 cockatiels are the noisiest birds that we have. Let me explain. My macaws entertain themselves and generally do not get into screaming matches unless they see or hear something that bothers them. We remove the stimulus and the noise stops. I have a very very unusual Eleanora cockatoo and he rarely is loud.(I know that may be unbelievable but I promise he does not scream, he talks a lot, and plucks his feathers, but I've only heard him scream once or twice since we got him in March). My CAG Angel can get started and make annoying noises(copies the cockatiels) but I can generally relocate her and the change in scenary generally stops her sqwawking. D the Amazon, came here with the reputation of being very loud. I have no idea what they were talking about. She will on occasion give a few loud noises, but nothing that is a bother. The cockatiels ,on the other hand, make noise almost constantly. A constant annoying song that does not change and gets on my nerves like nails on a chalk board. Nothing we do seems to make any difference. If our large parrots behaved as the cockatiels, I wouldn't have as many parrots.( or I would be locked up in an insane assylum somewhere)

My ekkie girl loves to talk and whistle--but at normal acceptable volumes. She talks to herself during the day when I'm at work (my neighbors have told me they hear her through the open windows). She very rarely screams--and it's only at sundown if she decides to go for it. To me, she's more like a radio or TV that's always on in terms of the chatter she makes.

I have a female cockatiel and a female ekkie. So far, my female cockatiel is louder than my ekkie! However, both do make noises when awaiting their meals! In the evening there is more noise than the morning, I think it is cause not only do they know that their food is coming, but also because they are excited to see me! My cockatiels sound is more high pitched while my ekkies sounds are more lower pitched yet when she sqawks close to you, your ear drum can rattle! I live in an apartment and have had no complaints yet!(Keeping my fingers crossed!) I have only had my female ekkie for two weeks now, but since the cockatiel is louder and I have had her since March and had no complaints, I think that I am in the clear!
