Is food coloring safe for birds

Someone told me when making toys that I could soak the rope and wood in food coloring to make differnet colors to attract the birds attention. Does anyone else do this and is it safe? I soaked some rope overnight to color it and when I opened the jar it had a very strong smell to it. It bothered me and I haven't made anything with it so I had to ask for advise.

Thie bigger question is: Does it color bird poop like it colors human pee?

That could lead up to an very interesting and amusing vet visit.

Food coloring on non edible things is fine. However, I wouldn't suggest adding artificially colored foods to your bird's diet. I have seen photos of Ekkies who had been fed colored pellets that were the craziest things I'd ever seen. Some literally had a polka dotted appearance. You can check some of them out on WWW.LANDOFVOS.COM. I think its under the category Birds of a Different Color.

Hey, I ordered the trial size sampler of the Vitacritter dye and I loved it. I bought 16 oz bottles of alcohol and poured out 1 oz then added the dye to the bottle and put the provided label on. I have colored blocks several times and still have MUCH dye left. I think it is a wonderful investment.

Thanks all for your replies and thanks Outlaw for answering my question. I can't remember who had told me that it was ok to use food coloring but I wanted to make sure before I actually placed the toys in the cages.
