I don't think your cycle has any real effect on your bird's behaviour, however if you feel badly, they probably do react to that.
I would try gently holding his beak (very gently) and telling him NO when he lunges. He's definitely testing you. Please be gentle. Their little beaks are still on the soft side until they are at least one year old and they have lots of nerve endings there. Always be gentle, kind and firm and reward good behaviours.
