Okay, I'm going to complain! I was going to post this first! I was going to show how well Donna was doing with all those birds!!!! WAAAH!!! LOL j/k cause I had actually forgot to!

Things actually seem to be going better than most people would have thought! She is overrun with birds, but things look clean from these photos! Only problem I see is them trying to figure out who owns who after some of the birds chewed up their papers!

I did have concerns that they weren't fostering the birds but I must say this set up is very good. They do look well cared for.

"The little cockatiel on the far right in this picture was one incredibly lucky and tough bird. His house had flooded, and you could see the bottom half of his cage was still filthy from where the water had risen half way up. He had survived for days clinging to the bars at the top of his cage with no food, and the fetid water below."

That made me cry. That poor, brave little tiel, he must have been terrified and exhausted. I am still upset that people even left their birds behind, I can't help but think of the ones whose cages flooded all the way to the top.

I know how you feel, I do too. I try hard, very hard, not to think about the poor ones who didn't make it. :*(
It breaks my heart. I try to think more of the saved ones, who are very lucky indeed!!
I've cried lots over these things...I could not sleep if I had left any of my animals behind. Either they go with me, or I'd have left their doors open so they could find safety by themselves. Sighhhhhh.
Hugs to all and give xtra hugs to our birds,
Linda & Skye~

New orleans birds

The birds that are being and have been rescued had to go through conditions that i wouldnt wish on any living creature.

I went in to one place that had birds and found a cage with 25 to 30 budgies all of which had died except a single bird that survived by eating his cagemates as they slowly died(he is healthy now but mentally gone)

Another house had a large number of birds(25 or 30 macaws and some medium birds(zons and conures) that were dead because the owner put them in the house and just drove away in his truck (right next to the highway)

When we kicked in the door i climbed over the furnature and went to the back of the house where there were cages filled with dead birds still clinging to the top of the cages some with their heads forced through the bars in an effort to get a breath of air as the water slowly filled up the house.

The houses in new orleans are just big buckets of black mold and toxic chemicals in most cases but some birds still manage to survive.

It is not a vacation down there at donnas either, everyone there is working all day every day and some of the rescuers that have been kicking in doors to help pets have become so stressed and disturbed by what they have seen that they will need professional help for years to come.

There are still dead people in some of those places and you can smell them as you drive by or kick in the door.

Donna needs volunteers to help clean cages and look for animals as well as to go into the newly affected areas to continue the work.

I will be heading back to the coast in 3 days or so to start on lake charles or another town that needs the help.

if you can help out just contact donna or me and i will let her know you are willing to help.

John

Everyone that helps is a hero

All of the rescue teams that have slogged through the mud and filth are heros that sadly will never get noticed for their bravery and self sacrifice while working in the destruction of Katrina and Rita.

They are becoming ill, sleeping very little, and doing jobs that some of the army and human rescue teams told me that they would not do for any reason because of the danger and possibility of infection by some deadly disease.

Every volunteer from the ones cleaning cages and setting up a database to the vets and workers that are going into homes to rescue pets deserve the respect and appreciation of the entire country for their efforts in the disaster area, working without fail to provide a safe haven for countless of animals that are alive now because the volunteers decided that they were more important than their owners felt they were.

Damn, John that is one powerful visual you painted. That's the picture I DON'T want to imagine because it is just too horrible to be real. Yet it happened and all those innocent birds died a horrible, terrifying death because their owners left them behind trapped in cages. I think my blood is about to boil over so I better stop here..............you know me well enough to know what I want to say anyway....................
