Home at last :)

He's Home :) I have worried all week that the sweet bird I met would somehow turn into a snarling beastie when I got him home. Actually, I kind of expected it just due to the stress of the transition. But so far he has been nothing but a huge cuddlebug his only close to bad trait being that he screams for me when I have to leave the room to do something else. Im making it a point to not just go running to him (although its hard) so as not to start any bad habits.

The breeder I got him from was trying to be nice and clipped his wings before I got there....I wish he had asked as I really didnt want a clip on him yet but it wont hurt him its a shame to loose his pretty blue flight feathers, but he has lots of other color going on. Kind of reminds me of an amazon that got carried away with the finger paints :)

as promised, photos. Heres my handsome guy just settling in

And here is the spoiled bird on with his palace (the bird shop thought I was getting a scarlett to go in the cage, when I said red front they said he was spoiled) I still think it could be bigger, but if I had my way he would just have the whole room to himself

How pretty! Excellent looking guy. Your cage is perfect. May I make a suggestion? You might want to look for toys with blocks of wood a bit thinner. For some reason the medium sized macaws seem to be a bit intimidated by thick stuff. Some days, I even have to cut thinner stuff for my BGs. The really stuff to be about 1 to 2" thick.

How long did it take you to assemble the cage? I always have to do it alone. Will and I don't work well together in small places. He's too bossy (LOL).

I think you're gonna be very happy with this sweet guy. Congratulations!

When I picked out the toy the size was relative to the cage and I just forgot how much smaller he actually is than a full size macaw. Im definitely going to get some others to go in there and rotate them out. I put him in the travel carrier which I kept thinking was just barely big enough all week and he seemed like he shrunk...he was much bigger in my mind ;)

He's already eating well, and happily out of a dry mix of fruits veggies seeds and pellets he went straight for the pellets so he knows how to eat right. Tonight we will try the hot prepared foods with him and see how he likes it.

LOL...wifeydear and I dont work well in tight places either. I put it together myself. It didnt take too long once I figured out the directions were useless and just gave it a go. Probably about an hour including hauling everyting in and up the stairs. I dread the fact that I have to take it all apart again to get it downstairs when quarrantine is over.

Congrats,
I love to see people with Red Fronts, everyone needs one. I've been working on my thesis recently and the bird has taken to buzzing me every few minutes. It would be annoying if it weren't so funny. They seem to have an indefatiguable repetoire of silly things.

One caution, my aviary seems to have issues with RFs developing screaming issues. I think its and insecurity thing but when they get bad they get really bad. I'd be vigilant with not responding to him like you are now.

Congrats again.

He's actually already getting better about the not screaming thing. He gives out 4 or 5 shouts when I leave the room then all is quiet. I've been making it a point of not entering if its not quiet, sometimes he shouts if he hears me coming so I wait outside the door until all has been quiet for awhile. I will definitely stay on it because I have a real bad noise sensitivity and I get agitated very quick with loud noises, although so far his yells have not been unbearable when Im out of the room as I have experienced with larger macaws and 'toos.

I put him on the bed and we hung out for a bit. Still a little cautious
about everything but he did decide to "explore" me some more. Ive been told Macaws must "taste" everything so I knew this was coming but it was still a little scary,he put his beak down to my arm then just as gentle as could be licked my arm a little. That seemed to satisfy him. I put him at one end of the bed and sat at the other and he came running to sit in my lap....he's a puppy. Im pretty much amazed so far...he is a definite snuggle munch, ran up my arm before I could stop him and perched on my shoulder then snuggled up to my neck.

If they are all like this more people should know about them, they are wonderful :)

What a little cutie! I have never seen a RFM in person, I don't think we have one here. He sounds so sweet and loving!

Congratulations Daddo!!
Jim, you are exactly right about the puppy thing! I found that thinking of my B&G as a mouthy little puppy really helped to calm my nerves when he uses his beak. As a matter of fact, I still call him Puppy alot, because he is mouthy, but will let you roll him over, scratch him everywhere, and generally maul him. I learned that from watching Nanth and her birds. At the time, I was shocked that she would rub those critters upwards, backwards, and sideways. She did, she just mauled those guys!! But ya' know what? They loved it!!!
Sounds to me like you have an extra-great-supah-fantastical bird on your hands. How lucky is he to have found you?!!

Jeth
