what's your thermostat set at in the winter?

My boyfriend is playing around with the heat this evening, trying to make everything works and the thermostat is set properly as it is getting colder in these parts.

We have it between 68 and 70 from 2pm when I get home from work until about 9pm which is my bedtime. At night last year we had it set down to 63--is that going to be too cold for Scarlett? She's also in the room of the house that gets the coldest. She's by the windows now but I can move her cage against an interior wall when it gets cold enough to have the heat on regularly.

I cover her at night with an old fitted sheet which I don't think will hold in any great amount of heat for her. Should I have him set it for a higher temperature?

I set my thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees in the cold months. I have arthritis and to go colder is brutal. I also have cold spots in my home. I have purchased 3 portable oil filled radiators and I can't rave about them enough. They are wonderful. I keep one in my macaw room near my plucked BG. She gets cold in the winter.

They are inexpensive to run, very safe and give off no fumes. They don't burn the oil, they are electric. This way, you can keep your bird comfy and not waste heat in other rooms that don't need it.

So should I have him set the house for a higher temperature at night?

I'll look into the portable heater this weekend when we do our usual Target/Lowes trip.

Well, here's the deal: If she is in perfect health and not harboring any hidden illness, 65 is fine. However, at temps in the lower ranges of normal, the bird's systems are slightly stressed. That could, in theory make her more vulnerable to whatever she may be brewing.

The rule of thumb is this: if you are comfortable, your bird should be fine. And, again, if you ever do have a plucked bird, they MUST be kept in a warm room. Their missing feathers were their only insulation.

My bird room has it's own thermostat and heats separate from the rest of the house.

I keep the bird room temp at 72 in the winter it also faces south so it gets plenty of sun to heat it up during the day.

around 68 most of the time, they have there own bird room. ceramic tile seems to get cold in the room making the temp. cooler so sometimes i'll put a small heater out there to warm the room up quick.

I was toying with the idea of moving her into the front room anyway just so she could be more a part of things when she was in her cage--but nixxed the idea when I realized that there would be food flung all over the place and stuck on the walls. At least in the back room, guests don't get to see that mess!

Maybe I'll reconsider, though, at least for the winter.
