I set my thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees in the cold months. I have arthritis and to go colder is brutal. I also have cold spots in my home. I have purchased 3 portable oil filled radiators and I can't rave about them enough. They are wonderful. I keep one in my macaw room near my plucked BG. She gets cold in the winter.
They are inexpensive to run, very safe and give off no fumes. They don't burn the oil, they are electric. This way, you can keep your bird comfy and not waste heat in other rooms that don't need it.

Well, here's the deal: If she is in perfect health and not harboring any hidden illness, 65 is fine. However, at temps in the lower ranges of normal, the bird's systems are slightly stressed. That could, in theory make her more vulnerable to whatever she may be brewing.
The rule of thumb is this: if you are comfortable, your bird should be fine. And, again, if you ever do have a plucked bird, they MUST be kept in a warm room. Their missing feathers were their only insulation.

My bird room has it's own thermostat and heats separate from the rest of the house.
I keep the bird room temp at 72 in the winter it also faces south so it gets plenty of sun to heat it up during the day.

I was toying with the idea of moving her into the front room anyway just so she could be more a part of things when she was in her cage--but nixxed the idea when I realized that there would be food flung all over the place and stuck on the walls. At least in the back room, guests don't get to see that mess!
Maybe I'll reconsider, though, at least for the winter. |
