What do you feed your Parrot?

Hey,

I just wanted to ask everyone what they feed their birds, because I was recently told that I may not be giving Jake (my sennie) the best diet. The Parrot store I bought him from told me to set up his meal as follows in four bowls around the cage.

Bowl one - water (I change 2X a day)
Bowl two - a 1 to 3 ratio mix of ZuPreem AvianMaintenance Fruitblend flavor pellets with RoudyBush small pellets.
Bowl three - All natural bird seed Conure blend manufactured at the New England Bird Farm
Bowl four - Daily meal consisting of Monkey Chow (after it's been soaked in warm water and drained) and Yams ( occasionally I'll try peas or something new - all warmed up of course)

Is there something wrong with this? And may I have a specific menu for Jake? I also bring him with me and let him try whatever I'm eating. Thanks!

More veggies would be ideal, such as dark green leafy veggies, and orange or yellow veggies are really good.

I usually feed Kaylor of Colorado - Sweet Harvest Cockatiel w/out Sunflower to all my birds (4 budgies, 2 bourkes, cockatiel, cherry head conure) in the morning, and in the afternoons or evenings I usually feed them something out of the kitchen such as whatever veggies we have, cooked eggs, maybe a small amount of cereal, etc. It varies from day to day, and depending on whats in the house...

So I guess there's no set way of doing it huh? You just do what works for you? But do you see anything wrong with the way I'm feeding him?

My girl gets 2 fresh meals each day. Breakfast this morning for her was a bowl with the following: mustard greens, cucumbers, carrots, red cabbage, yellow squash, green apple, cooked butternut squash, and 1 small slice of orange and pomegranate.

Dinner tonight will be: fresh bean/pulse sprouts, 1/2 hardboiled egg, a few jalapenos (the last from the garden), and dab of plain yogurt with cayenne sprinkled on top.

She also always has a bowl of dry mix that I made myself. I bought most of the ingredients from the natural foods store and Trader Joe's. It includes: raw pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, soy nuts, raw cashews, raw walnuts, quinoa, yellow millet, unsweetened coconut, dried papaya, dried blueberries, dried cherries, dried strawberries, raw hazelnuts, unshelled sunflower seeds, uncooked basmati rice, uncooked popcorn, Lafaber parrot pellets, and Zupreem fruit pellets. There probably are more ingredients that I'm forgetting.

Monica- you feed exactly what I am feeding! I actually switched my fids from pellets to SEEDS, yes the dreaded seed, and their coloring drastically improved. My BHC gets access to seed all day, and throughout the day he gets fruits or veggies, a birdie muffin, and healthy people food. Today, he got 1. fresh bowl of seed 2. homeade eggfood with healthy spices added in 3. some pieces of green pepper 4. 2 whole grain crackers 5. one birdie muffin, banana/peanut butter/cinnamon flavor 6.and tonight he will be getting what I am eating- goulash! With meat, tomato sauce, spinach, etc.
I make all my own eggfood and treats (eggfood is mainly for the finches, but Higgins benefits from it too) and some of my treats include- birdie muffins, popcorn balls, birdie style, birdie no bakes, etc. That way I ensure that waht he is eating is healthy, even tho it taste good!

JMO I'm not a fan of monkey chow especially if it's bought in bags from bulk.
If it's not stored and packaged right it can have bacteria and fungus.

The only way I would use if it was used in a food that was cooked, like a birdie bread and baked in an oven. Again JMO

It's usually best with what works for each person as long as that person is feeding their bird a balanced varied diet. The best diet to feed is 100% fresh foods, or atleast 90% fresh foods with the rest containing seeds, and/or pellets... however that isn't even ideal for most people to do, so providing as varied as diet as they can is far better than providing seeds or pellets alone.

Interesting though to see that someone feeds a somewhat similar diet as to what I feed my birds!
