Unhappy Help!! Watery droppings....!!!!

Oh nooooo....

The African Grey that i am looking after has started to have really watery droppings. The green bit is still in one piece and still a dark green but the bit that used to be white has gone all watery!!

Could it be that he had six small pieces of honey melon today? I don't think he usually has melon at home....

The vet came by to see my cats yesterday, and i asked him to take a look at the bird... he said he looked alright and that usually the signs of flu are a runny nose.....

Oh no.... I'm so worrried. He's not my bird!!!

That may very well be from the melon.

As a rule, a good diet should consist of the following:

Fresh or frozen: mixed veggies, kale, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, Swiss chard, broccoli, spinach, snow peas, peas, beans (reconstituted from dried), sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, carrots, beets, and most other veggies.

Serve LIMITED amounts of fruits such as apple, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, oranges, melons including seeds, peaches, plums, pears, apricots, nectarines, raspberries, etc. You may also offer dried fruits and veggies IF not sulphur has been used in the process. That's why raisins are not recommended.

You may also offer whole grain breads, birdie breads, salt free crackers, pasta, hard cheese such as cheddar, cooked chicken with bones, turkey w bones, beef, pork, fish and tofu.

Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, peanuts, pistachios, pecans, pinenuts, Brazil nuts and cashews should also be offered if they have no salt added.

I'm no fan of pellets, but some do offer them as well.

In general, feed 50% of the diet by way of veggies,10% fruit, 15% protein, and divide the rest with the seed/nut mix and starches such as breads and pasta.

When you offer eggs, also offer cooked eggshells. Its an excellent source of calcium as are the cooked bones.

You may have to offer the foods in many different combinations before this bird even understands they are food at all. Be patient. Its worth it in the end.

fruit definitely can cause watery droppings. Keep an eye on them over 24 hours and you'll see that they change depending on what the bird has been eating.

If the fecal part is still in tact, it is most likely the extra fruit in his diet that is doing it. Try feeding him something more solid in his next meal and see if his poops don't go back to normal.

If the fecal part gets all mushy and mixes up with the urine and urates, that's when you have to worry.

Any melon causes watery droppings with Abbie my CAG.
She loves Honey Dew, Cantalope and Watermelon.
Hopefully, it is just diet related.

Great news. Glad things are returning to normal. When my CAG's eat friut, the droppings are more watery some times. Keep us updated on how he is doing.
