do they know the difference?

Scarlett has a rather large vocabulary and repertoire of sounds that she can make including various whistles, chirps, clicks, kissy sounds, etc.

She doesn't bother me in the slightest when she talks to me (or herself), chirps/whistles/clicks at herself, etc. Lately, though, when she really gets going, all she does is the same obnoxious squeaking sound that is extremely similar to nails on a chalkboard. Once she starts it, all talking and whistling stop. She does this continuously for as long as I let her hang out in the kitchen with me while she's doing it. If I look at her, she stops but as soon as I look away she starts again.

Does she know the difference between these sounds? To my human mind, it's like she's being lazy and just making random noise instead of things she's learned. I know that birds are completely different creatures, and they are fairly new to me, so I'm asking you guys.

Does she know the difference between sounds she's learned and things she's making up? Or is it all just noise to her that she's learned to make, some of it at the appropriate times?

I think birds are amazing when it comes to sounds and know how and when to use them.

Our CAG Pearl thinks our poodle is fun to drive crazy. When the dog lies down Pearl will make a perfect "knock on the door" and the dog goes running and barking. When the dog comes back and lies back down and gets comfy Pearl will do the "knock on the door" and the dog is off and barking. I'm starting parrots are smarter than dogs,at least my dog.

Pearl also has this high pitch scream that makes our ears ring and he uses this when he wants our attention. Our B&G Charlie hates that noise and he responds to it with his window shaking scream that Pearl doesn't like, yep you guessed it, they do it back and forth to aggravate each other.

I think we are cheap and easy entertainment for our birds.

I agree with Joe! They know exactly what they are doing it and why! They are too smart not to!

Now, the question is, can we be smarter then them and figure out how to get them to stop???

Of course we are, why else do you think they put up with us!

Chaska sure is smart enough to know which noises will get her kisses and which ones I try to ignore until she gets too loud and I tell her to shut up! She always quiets down when I pick her up, but I have to be careful not to let her think squawking is the way to get attention. She does the cutest imitation of my laugh, I have to try to get a video clip of that!

Of course they know what they are saying! LOL! Every time I let my caique out, he sings out"Birdies out watch out birdies out Higgins here!" And if the phone rings he says "Hello, Higgins here" When he gives you kisses, he makes kissy noises- but here is something I think you all will get a kick out of-
I had Higgins out with me, and I was doing folding laundry, and my one of my cats was walking around on the bed. I had Higgins on my shoulder, and he jumped off and started 'exploring' and so I let him, as long as he stayed on the bed. He sees the cat, races over and starts attacking the cats tail. The cat just lays there, looking at him, like what in the world are you doing? I see that he being mean to the poor kitty, so I go over and scoop him up and tell him he has to be nice to the kitty, not to bite the kitty, and he starts making kissy noises, like, "mom, I wasnt BITING the kitty I was KISSING the kitty!" You could clearly tell he was trying to tell me something different, it was hilarious!
