Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ugh it seems my Ekkie may have eaten some of a choc chip cookie today. My 5 year old nephew came in and without my knowledge set it on the bed where she was. He swears she didn't touch it, but he's 5. I've given her lots of good food to eat hoping it will push things through. Gave her lots of water/apple in the hopes the water with help clear her out. It's been a few hours and she seem alright, what else should I do and what signs can I look for that she's getting sick??

BTW my nephew is normally extremely good with asking before he gives her anything. Had I known he hadthe cookie he wouldn't have been allowed in the room.

Aloe is a laxative- you could try adding that to some of her water. But, as long as she didnt eat the whole cookie, she should be OK. I have read books where a bird got a few M&ms here and there and they are still alive and kicking :)

I do not recommend feeding chocolate to a psittazen, *however* chocolate manufactured in the USA, by law (fda regulation) has all theobromine (active alkaloid that can kill birds, dogs, & cats;& which causes people to feel "loved") removed. Indeed I don't advocate allowing a companion parrot to snarf chocolate willy-nilly, but even the veterinarians at uc-davis, & others on the leading edge of avian (parrot particularly) medicine acknowlege that (very) small amounts of chocolate pose no real danger. More likely to cause gastric distress would be the lactose present in milk chocolate. Don't feel to stressed over a chocolate chip cookie. Unless they were imported chocolate chips, there is (very) little risk.

I've heard of one parrot that was fed chocolate every day it wished! The sad thing was was that it belonged to a girl who WOULDN'T listen to what other's said, and her mother didn't know any better. I heard of this a couple years ago, and the bird did appear otherwise fine, but in the long run, things CAN build up, and possibly cause long term damage, if it doesn't kill the bird first. I agree, a little is fine, though not ideal to feed.

It was a story I had read some years ago, though can't find it now since it's old... the girl did give chocolate to her bird and when another student tried to tell her that it was wrong, the girl just became stuck up and snotty... it's sad, and who knows if that bird is still alive or not...
