Sexing.......

NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION.......

We've discussed, several times around here, different ways to sex African Greys. I'm assuming the discussion mainly pertained to Congos. Does anyone have any idea on how to sex a Timneh (visually that is)? Is it possible? Should I have put this question in "Ask the Expert" and maybe Jean would pick it up? It was just a thought!!

Thanks

Please I don't consider myself an expert by any means, but I don't believe there is a way to "visually" sex a TAG. The female CAGS are known to have silver edging on the underside of their red tail feathers after they have their first molt, some more prominent than others. I think that maybe someone with a lot of experience with TAG's might be able to give a fairly accurate educated guess by assessing their bone structure. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

After talking with some others, I remembered that females tend to stand with their legs further apart (obvoiusly for egg laying). That's something I completely forgot about.

But Don, I think that could only be a clue if you had at least another TAG to compare it to... And even then you'd only really have a 50% shot.

Personally, I don't think sexing is a necessity, unless you have more than one bird of the same species. The only bird I've had sexed was Koko, and it was more a 'what the hell why not' while we were at the Vet..Good thing I did...cuz what I'd been told was wrong!!

Good point Lissa. I, too, don't think it's a necessity unless I was breeding (which I don't plan on doing). But it's still good to know, sometimes. And I was just wondering if there was a visual way, like in Congos.

Don:

I don't think there is with TAGS. The CAGS can be visually sexed with the silvery feather tipping underneath the tail feathers. As for posture, the hens do tend to have wider pelvises, but you'd almost have to have two of known gender to see the difference. Also, that's only good in older birds, not very young ones.

Hey Don Sweetie! Which Grey is your "preference?" I know you'd take either that needed a home, but I was wandering if you had a choice, which it would be and why?

I hope one finds you soon!

This is the story, Tracy. I've always loved Greys for as long as I can remember. When I first got into birds when I was younger, my dream was to have a Grey. I read up on them, and decided that was my ultimate dream bird. I only knew of Congos until as recent as last year. I think I may have heard of Timnehs, but not too much, so I really didn't think about them much. I was set on a Congo. Now that I've learned more about Timnehs, I think they fit my personality better. I still love Congos and would love to have one eventually. But right now I'm set on Timnehs.
