It is the custom amongst Jews to mark the yearly anniversary of the date of a loved one becoming niftar. Without apologies to any, I hereby digitally mark the jarhzeit of Laila, mate of BG, reared & loved by Yehuda:

Her name is still spoken by her mate, & she shall be remembered by all those of my house.

The phrase "without apologies to any" is a famous phrase used by Jews when in a circumstance they have to observe an important ritual in a manner not traditional. In this case since Laila was not a human, I cannot light a jahrzeit candle for her in schul, nor can I mention her name as one of the blessed of Israel. Nevertheless, I am marking her jahrzeit in the best way possible, & will continue to do so every year that I have life (as will my eldest son, if he wants his inheritance).

Frankly, I think that's one of the loveliest tributes I can think of to honor anyone or any pet that was ever loved. I too remember that awful day and how devasted you were. I'm simply an out-of-practice Baptist, but I don't think God has any problems with honoring any of his creatures. They are after all some of his greatest works.

I also think that is a beautiful custom! I never thought about honouring the anniversary of the death of my tiels who have passed on-Taina (mother of Manea, Rangi, Shaka, Tattoo and Rima) and Ariki ( mother of Maui) though I do consider their babies as my own and a worthy tribute to their natural mothers.

When we have all settled in for the night, BG will quite often call "Laila, come here" "come here Laila" "mmmm mmm Laila pretty baby", almost everytime he calls for Laila, AyatLeila will pipe up with "C'mere Ayat, Oh, what a good girl!" "AyatLeila, mahboob ta'a' ".
It is really quite sweet, until O'Hara booms out "be quiet fudluk!", such are the nights at Beit Ha Tukiot.

mahboob means "loved one" ta'a' is short for ta'aala henna "come here", & O'Hara is mangling min fudluk, basically "please" . These are all 'Arabic, since that was what we speak for everyday uses, Hebrew is for praying, or for when I'm visiting eretz Israel. I'm just waiting for some over-eager "wanna-be" spy type to report suspicious conversations, from overhearing the psittazens.
