Leg band question..
Hey all!
Was wondering if any of ya's know how I can trace my new B&G's leg band numbers. I got him a few months ago and the women told me he just turned 4 y/o but his legband says CONVFF 2003 and he was born in New Hampshire. The women doesnt seem like a liar at all,I just dont understand why 2003 would be on his legband. Thanks

Angie:
Check out L&M Legbands. Do a Google search. They are probably the number one manufacturer of legbands in the country. They can do a number search for $5. Not all breeders participate, but many do. That's how I traced the Fabulous Margaritas breeder in Florida.

Hello Angie,
Understanding the way leg band are stamped out is kinda tough. Looking at how you've stated the letter and number are I don't think that you have looked at it correctly no offense. We have a few birds that we have bought that are banded too and this is how it has been explained to me. ACS 41X 91 13 is a band that is on one of the cockatiel's that we have. ACS is American Cockatiel Society 41X is the breeder 91 is the year that it was hatched 13 would be the number that had hatched for that year so far L&M WA 97 30 is a band that is on Ripely the Senegal L&M is the manufacture of the band WA is the state 97 for the year hatched 30 would be the number that had hatched for that year so far TPS OR 03 16 is a band that is on a Lovebird TPS is the breeder OR is the state 03 is the year 16 would be the number that has hatched so far that year WA 02 319 is on another lovebird. Now this is a tough one. WA could either be the state or the breeders code 02 would be the year 319 is the number hatched for that year so far. I hope that you can see the pattern and maybe relook at the band. Normally they do not put the full year on the band. You see how it is 91, 97, 03 and 02? I'm thinking that your bird hatched in 03 and it is the 20th bird hatched to that breeder for that year so far. Normally how the bands are stamped out is Group (American Love Bird Society, American Cockatiel Society, Because they normally use group legbands) Breeder State year number hatched This is another site that you can search on without paying http://buddysfriends.com/registry.html We have been able to locate some bands for other people but never for ourselves. Once again the breeder has to have given them the information. Hope that might be of some help. Another site is http://www.afabirds.org/index.shtml but there again the breeder needs to have given them the information. You can always send an email to the region that you think the bird was hatched in to see if they are willing to do a search for you. Last edited by Mr Five : 10-31-2005 at 05:05 PM. |

What the difference between an open band and closed band? I know that a closed band has to be put on when the bird is young, an open badn can be put on at any time- I just dunno what they look like. None of my birds have bands, except for this zon I am fostering, and it looks like it has a break in it, but he will not let me get close enough to see.

Open and Closed band will have the same information on them. The Open bands can be placed on a bird at any age. The Closed bands will be placed on a chick within 7 days of hatching. Breeders that put on open bands normally do this when they have run out of closed bands and are waiting on more to arrive. Looking at a closed band you will see a line going from top to bottom somewhere on the band. It will look like a crease. All closed band you do not see this line.
There are dangers to this and that is that the birds will chew on them and get them open or somewhat open. I've seen pictures of a bird that had an open band and then got it caught on a cage. The bird ripped it's foot off because had gotten caught. I would recommend that anyone having a bird with and open band take it to their vet to have the band removed. |
