Ouch! Glad you understand how birds are though. That is a scary thought that ER people would report a dangerous animal. I wouldn't have known, if it happened to me, I would just say that it was a wild bird or something.

Dana:

Kudos for staying calm and thinking it through. I got a bite on the lip from Dreamer this past summer that went all the way through. I've never seen so much blood in my life.

Once I got the situation under control, I simply realized the error of my ways. I had caged his buddy, Sailor with whom he has bonded, with him while I was cleaning cages on a rainy day. They don't normally co-habitate. When I reached in to retrieve Sailor, Dreamie came at me in a full on attack. It was my own stupidity and an action my bird shouldn't have to pay for with his life. We sometimes forget how wild they really are.

I know it hurts and you will have learned a valuable lesson. We can assume nothing when living in the jungle. By the way, I suggest that all bird owners stay current on tetanus shots and keep Betadine washing solution in your first aid kit. It's what they use to clean out wounds and prep for surgery in hospitals. Peroxide is not a good option. It can only be used once and after that, does more harm than good.

Also, keep some Preparation H cream (not ointment) handy. It will reduce swelling and numb the pain. Its also safe to use on bird feet should they become injured in a fight.

We live, we learn. I hope you feel better soon. That is one very lucky bird to have found you.

Oh, Dana! I am so sorry that you got so badly bitten. But I do understand the sudden uncontrollable urge to snatch your hand away from the offending beak. Been there, done that. You left out one important thing, though. The MONKEY Dance! LOL.
Poor Mickey, he must have had an awfully scary life, before he came to live with you.

Nancy, you are so right. After some thought, I think Mickey reacted that way because I generally talk to him and move a little more slowly when changing his dishes. That morning I was running late and i rushed though it. Maybe i scared him or maybe he didn't like it that I changed the routine. This morning he was just fine with it, with no problems.

Either way, I don't hold it against him, and I dove right back in this morning with a brave face. Can't let him see me sweat! lol

Tiki, the dr that stitched up my hand was a college buddy of my husbands. Which is why I am not worried over being reported. It really never occured to me before to worry about that. I think I may be more careful of it in the future though, just in case.

Sorry to hear about your wound, and I'm glad you didn't take it out on the bird. Hopefully it'll heal in no time.

But look on the bright side. At least you've finally lived up to your name. As they say in the vernacular, you've finally been owned by a macaw.
