Ouch!

Well, for the first time in my life, a bird has given me stitches. I was changing Mickey's water dish, which apparently was an offending act to him, so he stretched across the water dish and caught the webbing between my thumb and forefinger. The bit was all the way through, and as I was not expecting it at all, because he had not been in an aggressive posture, I snatched back before I could stop myself and it ripped the wound before he let go.

It hurt like the devil and bled like a stuck pig, so I sat in the floor and cried for a few minutes, bleeding all over the floor. The sound must have attracted him somehow because he hopped out of his cage and waddled over to me and was very curious about what I was doing.

I guess he realized he had done something awful because he gave no protest to going back into his cage when I finally got up.

Went to the ER, got ten stitches and had my hand immobilized so as not to pull them since the wound is in such an awkward place, and had a tetnus shot. So now I'm typing one handed and sitting on a pillow (those shots HURT)

Anyway, despite it all, I'm not mad at Mickey. What I would like to do is find the lowlife that owned him before and torture them for whatever it is that they did to him to make him so vicious. My friend who took me to the ER says I'm crazy for not being mad at Mickey, but it's just not his fault.

Anyway, I just wanted to whine a bit to someone who'd understand and I know you folks do.

btw, Mal did fine with being out with another bird and I'm gonna let him start comming out with everyone else each day from now on.

Yikes! Sounds like it hurt!

My friends (and my husband!) always give me flak whenever I get bit by something. "I'd be serving bird for dinner" or something like that. It's part of living and working with animals, you know?

I am paranoid about having injuries that require ER visits, though. I've read horror stories about people getting their animals taken away from them after showing up at the ER with the war wounds. Those were mostly reptiles, though.... maybe some dogs. Sounds like your trip went okay, and maybe you'll have a nice scar to show and tell when the whole thing is over with :)

I guess it's hard to understand unless you are the one it happens to. I agree that its just part of the job.

im not overly worried about the er visit. A friend stitched me up and he knows how it is at the house so I don't think hed report it or anything. if he does I'll be having him for dinner, not Mickey.Lol.

Forgive the typing, it's amazing how hard it is to type with just one hand.

Sounds very painful, esp. in such an awkward spot...I'm glad you're not mad at Mickey though...

I haven't been badly bitten - but I've been kicked hard by one of my horses...again, not her fault...she was trying to kick the mare behind her and I was dumb enough to be in the way...luckily I only cracked a rib and had some dramatic bruising...

...at least Mickey was concerned...I think that's a really good sign...

Lol, it's always a bad day for Mickey. I'm determined though that one day he will trust and possibly even love us. He's just a very insecure and suspicious bird right now, and i understand why.

Thanks for the hugs. And OW about the horse. I cant' imagine how that must have hurt.

I don't know if he was concerned or just curious, but I do take his going back to his cagewithout a fuss as good.
