ZuPreem® AvianEntrées™ Diets

I stopped at the pet store yesterday an ran across the new Zupreem AvianEntrées. I am always looking for new foods for my birds since they do not eat a wide variety of veggies (I bake for them also) they are so picky.
I ended up with the Garden Goodness mix and my birds are going crazy for it.
The ingredients are wholesome nuggets, with no added colorants mixed with red and green peppers, peas, tomatoes and apples.
I still am feeding them their regular organic seed mix with Kaytee Exact pellet also.
Has anyone else here tried this product?

I like Zupreem products, and have been wanting to try the avian entrees. I am worried that my birds would pick out the yummy stuff and leave the nutritious stuff, and half of it would go to waste. I prefer, utimately, to make my own mixes because I feel like I can control portioning better.

Just FYI, Kaytee Exact contains a preservative called Ethoxyquin, which has been linked to health issues in animals and humans (it is no longer allowed to be used in human foods)- I want to say cancer, but I don't remember for sure, and, forgive me, I don't much feel like looking it up. Many pet food companies are now steering away from it, but there are still a few, like Katyee and Iams, that still use it. I don't like to use any product containing this preservative.

I won't give you a hard time if you want to stick to the Exact, but I thought I would let you know. It has not been proven to cause cancer or health problems, but it has been associated with them... enough to ban it from human foods. Some people still believe it isn't and has never been an issue. If you are interested, you should be able to find some articles if you google it. Look for some pet specific articles, like, try "ethoxyquin in pet food" or something similar.

I did hear a rumor earlier this year that Kaytee was going to stop using ethoxyquin in its products, so you might check the ingredients label before panicking. Last I checked, they hadn't done it yet, but that's been at least six months ago.

:)

I find that my birds love that Avain Entree stuff, I've tried 3 different kinds now and they like it all. I think the one you got is more of a all around fav. Cause my tiel won't eat the spicy one..which the other 3 really seem to enjoy.

Glad your guys are liking it..cause that stuff is pricey, but it seems to last a while :)

I never feed pellets, but I actually picked up a bag of Avian Accents today. Can't remember which one, but it smells like green peppers. I like to keep a bag around here for birds that board and are used to pellets.

My birds all seemed to like it. However, its been my experience that as soon as I order the 25 pound bag of any pellet, they usually never touch it again. We shall see. I had also read that Kaytee was removing ethoquoxin from their foods.

Thanks for the heads up on Kaytee

I have heard the "E" word Ethoxyquin I did not find this out until a few weeks ago while reading the forums I visit
I have been looking for a replacement, something the birds would like.

I have tried the colored Zupreem pellets the birds picked around them, threw them on the floor of the cage did everything but eat them. So I tossed the Zupreem pellets.I have tried Harrisons too, that was the first one I tried. I try to go as organic as I can.
I would prefer to use all natural (even went as far to buy 15 soup) but they are just to darn stubborn

Hopefully they will continue to enjoy this new food so I can switch them over I just do not want to do it to quick.
I would take away the Kaytee pellet and just mix the organic seed in with the new Zupreem diet continuing with fresh fruits and veggies.
Hopefully this will be a good diet for them this is why I keep coming back reading the posts and asking questions I have learned a lot.

Sounds like mine wish I could get a refund on all the food I threw away, I would be rich. Funny thing is I went to the supermarket the same day and spent less money for my food then the birds Hmmmmmm...

I"m glad you were already aware of the Kaytee thing.

I hope your birds eat the avain entrees well. Sounds like you have a great diet all lined up! The best diets are high in variety, and it sounds like you have plenty of that.

My tiel loves the garden goodness and she eats the fruitblend also. I've had really good luck with zupreem. Even my brand new budgie took to it pretty well.
