Try putting some of his items in the cage from his day cage, and letting him explore the cage from a distance. Try putting treats and food near the new cage to get his interest so he'll eventually decide it's not all that bad. If he accepts the cage, you can get it completely set up to sleep in, and put him inside the cage for 15 or so mins before his bedtime. Once he's been in it for a short while, transfer him back to his day cage. Slowly increase this time, putting him to bed earlier if you have to, until he gets used to the cage without any problems and you can keep him in the night cage for the entire night. Be sure to reward him for being good in his night cage, though!

I would place his favorite treat in the new cage and ONLY there. I agree also about placing a few recognizable toys in there as well. He'll adapt in short order.

Thanks for the advice, I put his new cage right next to his day cage while I was at work, and had him sit on it while I got ready for work this morning. I hope that in due time he'll adjust, my other worry is that he's not used to being in the bedroom, I was think I'd take him in the Bedroom thoroughout the day to get him used to it as well. Think that should do it?
Thanks, Amanda and Oscar |

Is the sleep cage smaller, or not as nice as the day cage? If it is the same size style etc you could actually try using his familiar cage as the sleep cage for a while and the other as his day cage with favorite treats, toys etc. Then the new cage becomes fun and the cage he is used to would be stress free for sleeping. If this is not possible for long term would it be possible for short term until he is fully used to the new cage? Then after he is completely comfortable with the new cage you could try switching them back to being the other as the day cage and this as a sleep cage.
If that is not possible then the others all sound like good suggestions. You could try for the first week having the sleep cage in the same room as the day cage. Place favorite treat and toy in it and do not allow him to have same treat and toy in his usual cage. Then allow him to explore it on his own. After he settles into it a bit better you could then place it into the room where he will sleep at. Just basically the same ideas everyone else has given LOL! |
